I have purchased DVDs from all over the world, including the U.S.A. They play on my DVD recorder (Sony RDR-HX510, multi-region from new) with no problems at all.
As for the alleged PAL/NTSC problem - unless your TV is very old, it's irrelevant. Most modern TVs can display NTSC discs as well as PAL.

No. Both countries use different TV color systems. The U.S. system is called NTSC; the UK: PAL. Both systems have different aspect ratios, and frame-rates.

I'm aware of multi-region dvd players, and I'm not even sure if that will work. I know they play any region code, but do they play both TV systems? Plus, do you know weather or not your dvd player is even multi-regional?
