You have to clean first. And I mean clean out. Make up piles, throw away, keep, and give away. (clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry, etc.) Once you do this, it'll be a breeze. Then throw away, and bring to a church or resale everything you don't want, don't fit, out of style or haven't wore in a year. Once you do that, utilize your closet and under your bed. Totes and shelves are great! Put your winter stuff into totes and put in basement, closet or under bed, and reverse in winter (summer stuff in totes). Make up drawers that have a purpose. All socks in one drawer, all undies in one drawer, all pants hung in closet, all shirts in one drawer. Same with shelves. One shlf for purses, one for belts, etc. You get the idea, just make it work for what you have. Once it has a place, you can't lose it, and it's easy to clean up and put things away! Good luck! :)

I think the other answers have been good, and just wanted to add a couple of things. Have you seen the "space bags" infomercial? These are GREAT for storing extra comforters, your winter sweaters, etc. Then you can make the most of your space, sliding these under the bed or in other small spaces.

Buy some nice-looking hat boxes or deep, fabric-lined baskets, and use these to store momentos and other "stuff" you want to keep but don't need frequent access to on top of the shelves in your closet or on top of tall furniture (armoire, bookshelves). These are great for collecting things you "intend" to do something with later (scrapbooking, etc.)

Commit yourself to spending 15 minutes per weekend, sorting through the new stuff that accumulates during the week (mail, documents, etc.) Being an "organized person" isn't something people are born into...it's a habit that some people develop and some don't. Commit to living this way for a month, and you will see that it saves you time, and it will be much easier to relax in your home.

The initial investment of time and money isn't much fun, but having a relaxing environment to come home to is completely worth it.

hello to another non-organized person! my serious answer may not sound serious tho.

if you really want to get organized recruit your most organized friend/family member (you know the one!!) and let them do it!!! they will LOVE the challenge and you will get what you need/want done. some people just have a gift for this sort of thing.

plan on a shopping trip with this person for containers shelves etc (so you will need a budget) and plan on a good labeler of some sort. then make a day or weekend of it. you might even want to do any redecorating at the same time (empty the room - paint etc then ONLY the stuff you want/need to keep comes back in its NEW organized/labeled spot!!

this way you will find your stuff when you are done.
in your budget plan for a 'victory' dinner/lunch or whatever for when you are done. its hard work and you will deserve it

good luck & try to have fun
