It is a recognition of our level of cooperation with His work. We can either try to help or hinder. If our cooperation means great sacrifice to ourselves for the greater glory of God, then His reward will reflect that.
Cheers :-)

He gives us the crowns because of His love for us.
Here are the five crowns and the reason one receives it:
1. The Incorruptible Crown, 1 Corinthians 9:25
To all believers with self-control.
2. The Crown of Life, Revelation 2:10
To all believers who are faithful to death; the martyr's
crown.
3. The Crown of Glory, 1 Peter 5:2-4
To shepherds of the flock; the pastor's crown.
4. The Crown of Righteousness, 2 Timothy 4:8
To all believers who love His appearing.
5. The Crown of Rejoicing, 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
To all believers present when Jesus comes.
Because we love Jesus, these are the crowns we will lay at His feet to His glory and honor.

Just like a job you are assigned work, told how it needs to get done. You have the authority issued by the boss.If you refuse to do assigned work you eventually can expect to be fired. If you do exceptional work on your assigned work (who knows) you may get pay raises, promotions, better Job offers, awards, etc.
Difference is in the real world you a boss' pet may get the benefits without the work.
God will reward those according to their faithfulness (believers).God has assignments each christian is to accomplish (He only gives what each person can fullfill).
