I have had many rats as pets, and they are great pets. Unlike hamsters they do not like wheels. Mine where hand held often (I got them as pups) and where very tame, and as such would take them out of their cage and let them run a bit, always keeping an eye on them. I kept them in a aquarium with a lid on it so it was easy to reach in and get them out. A dead end hallway with all doors closed will give you a chance to not let them get away until trained. They do not need to run just enough to walk around a bit. Or if you will the bigger the cage the better, I also used to put paper towel tubes in their cage for them to run hide and chase. All in all they really do not need a good workout, and actually prefer not too

Lizzy,
I found out that rats love the cages that are tall and have stairs in them! I had to Board my pet Rat a week ago for 3 days and they had a "Habitrail" in back and told me they let her "loose" in there and had a ball running up and down the stairs and using the wheel that's in there!
I have seen those at the pet stores and the one I want is purple in color, and perfect. It is tall and has 2 levels with stairs with a good size wheel at the bottom. I have to check on the price my next pay day but I'm getting one of those! Go check them out!

Try putting ropes/hammocks across the higher parts of the cage, with the food bowls attached to the side of the cage where they can only reach it if they have a little climb. Be careful to watch them to make sure they actually can get to it though.
You can also try one of those "roller ball' things. You put the rat in and let it roam around outside its cage without worrying about it squishing under a couch or anything. (You may want to adjust their diet too. Too much fat and/or sugar might be making your rats lethargic. Do some online research... try ratclub.org for more info.

go to a pet store and buy two hamster balls. And to get them out just put your hand in the cage then it will come to your hand.

How old are they? Most don't live past 3yrs. One of them could be pregnant or old. When mine got close to 3 yrs old they started to tire and slow down heaps. Do you let them run around outside their enclosure? they love that. Good luck.

Well you can go buy them a wheel and stick it in their cage. That's what I did with my hamster.

If you throw in a hungry cat, they'll get plenty of exercise.
