If you have read and enjoyed Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, then you would probably enjoy Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series. It is currently in it's 11th of 12 books, and will also have a prequel trilogy (of which one book has already been written). Each book is about 800 pages long. Robert Jordan's style is similar to that of Tolkien... he has developed an entire new world with a large history planned out before the first book was completed. He is very descriptive and can handle multiple plot lines at one time quite well.

Also, if you are daunted by 800 page books, his publisher has begun releasing the books in *halves*. In the standard series, the first book is Titled "Eye of the World", in the modified release, it's "From the Two Rivers".

The Riftwar series by Raymond E. Feist. No one can beat Master Magician Pug. But don't read anything after King's Buccaneer cause thats when it turned into garbage. Also Dragonlance, the first three books especially.

Oh and I agree with the guy above... the Bible is a great fantasy book.

Anne McCaffrey's Dragon series, beginning with Dragonflight
Anne McCaffrey's Acorna series, beginning with Acorna ( the
third book in Acorna's Children is coming out in August)
Orson Scott Card's Ender series, beginning with Ender's
Game (this is more of a sci-fi series, but I still like it)
James Patterson's Maximum Ride series, beginning with
Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment
Tamora Pierce's The Circle of Magic series, beginning with
Sandry's Book
Tamora Pierce's Alanna series, beginning with Alanna: The
First Adventure
Christopher Paolini's Inheritance series, beginning with
Eragon
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's The Kiesha'ra series, beginning
with Hawksong
Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea series, beginning with A Wizard
of Earthsea
Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, beginning with Artemis
Fowl
L. Ron Hubbard's Battlefield Earth (this one is pure sci-fi)
I recommend Maximum Ride-the third book is coming out in three days and it's my new fav series- it's about genetically modified flying kids on the run.
I hope this has been useful-it has about two year's worth of reading if you don't go fast.

P.S. Jane Yolen's Pit Dragon chronicles series, beginning with Dragons Blood and Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword are also good.

Anything by Mercedes Lackey or Anne McCaffrey is excellent. I also really really like David Eddings, Joan Vinge, Piers Anthony, and Terry Brooks. I also agree with the person who recommend Jim Butcher.

The Shannara series, written by Terry Brooks is really good. The first book is "Sword of Shannara" followed by "Elfstones of Shannara". I'm not sure how many are in the series but I've read four, not in order, and liked the first two the best.

The Noble Dead series of books by Barb & JC Hendee....vampires, elves, fey, and other fantastical creatures all in one storyline.
I also like all the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher...the premise is a wizard-gum shoe. Great.

Pendragon;Artemis Foul;Cirque Du Freak;Keys to the Kingdom. Please note I am a teen, so these might not be so great for adults. Also, Cirque Du Freak is kind of a horror book, too.
