There are many books out there that are called "Teach yourself guitar" or the "Idiots guide to guitar" or something along those lines. Just head over to a guitar store near you, run over to the music section and ask about guitar books, and there you will find a lot most likely. Just choose one that you think looks best for you.

Of course if you have never played music before, that might be a lot harder than if you had. Teachers help a lot if you are able to get one.

one of the first books i got when i decided to self teach myself again (after having a terrible teacher) was giants of blues by neville martin. It's a great insight into what the blues is about and it's in the styles of the blues kings. It made me realise what the guitar is about and, although they weren't actual pieces by the original artists, it made me want to learn the guitar to be able to play those solos and it made me learn all the tedious bits. I also started listening to artists like peter green, hendrix, buddy guy, gary moore etc. At first, I couldn't play much of the interesting stuff... but after a few months of practice, I could suddenly play it pretty well. I had to get other books first though. Mainly books like progressive blues and rock, etc.
A good idea for you to do is to maybe get some guitar magazines, learn a few songs and then try training your ear to being able to learn songs without any sheet music/tabs. You can also look up tabs on the internet for complicated songs.

thousands have and there is tons of books. My husband got a book that tells first how to read music. Learn the way on easy songs. Got a teacher to show him the best way to handle it and at school they have band teachers that can show you and give you books on reading music.
Then get sheets of music that shows each step. Go from there and paractice every day. Now he is pretty good.

a basic chord book is good. and learn your bar or moveable chords. if you have a friend or family member that plays, get them to show you some stuff. some easy songs using major minor chords that you can start to strum, sing along etc. are good to learn.
