Try Metholated Spirits. It's a degreaser and I've found it good for getting all dirt & grease off surfaces prior to painting. It certainly removes residue from double sided tape so it would do your job. DO NOT use white spirit.

If you are on about white tack like blue tack,the best i find is using the same stuff,and just rolling it over and over the same place brings it all off as if none was there in the first place/
If its the double sided sticky patches,i use Killit bang,cheaper version of cillit bang advertised on tv.

Try sugar soap as this removes grease, Ive found also that vanish spray left on for a while works on all sorts of glue.

I used wd40 to get old masking tape residue off the front door (previous owner did it) it worked pretty good. then I mixed up some t.s.p. & water to get the wd40 off the door

try goof off, since you are repainting anyway the yuck that the goof off leaves behind can be repainted over (or you may need to lightly sand first)
p.s. then go smack husband on back of head lol

Get one of those window scrapers, scrape of what you can then in should come off with a hot soapy scourer

Can't you use steam from a kettle, that works on most things that are to do with decorating.
