Depends what if your field of work...
It is easy to be a consultant provided you have a solid experience in your field of work...
There will be a lot of pressure at work as a consultant... and a lot of responsibiities are on you..

On the good side... there is travelling involved too...

As a consultant... and depending on your field of work... you can limit the kind of work/contracts you want to do and where you want to do it...

I work with a company and they find contracts for me... in return they take a bit of my billing rates... its not bad as I dont have to look for contracts myself and they will ifnd it for me... as well as the clients many times pay for my travelling so its really good...

What kind of work do you do... let us know and may be we can answer it better

A consultant goes into a company on a temporary basis, looks at their processes, problems and issues, and makes recommendations for improvement.

To be a consultant, you would need education, probably a degree and maybe an advanced degree, in the field you want to consult in, plus usually several years of experience working in that field. The degree, of course, would depend on the field you want to consult in.

Major accounting or consulting firms sometimes hire people right of out college for consulting jobs.

Many consultants travel a lot, but that can get old - you are living in a hotel, working all day and often all evening, and sometimes weekends. You don't just get to vacation on these travels. And you go where the jobs are, which are not necessarily places you'd choose to go.

Pay can be very good if you're good at what you do. There are consultants in many fields. Accounting and engineering have lots of consultants.
