I really think we need more details to answer this--like is it a desktop or a laptop--but here goes. First, let me see if I understand what is happening. You turn on the computer, and it starts to come to life (I assume you hear the fan and/or hard drive). Then you see the Acer logo which I assume comes from the computer being and Acer (as opposed to the monitor). Then the screen goes black. Right?
The first thing to do is listen to see if the drives keep working after the screen goes blank. It could be the computer is booting up okay but the video driver--the software that tells the computer how to talk to the screen--is not happy.
You should be able to unplug the computer, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and then, when you turn it on, hold down one of a number of different keys that will access the BIOS, that is the software built into the computer that runs before it tries to load software from the hard drive (it could be F1 or F10 or Del but may be Control + Alt + Escape, held down during the whole startup process until the thing beeps like crazy--it won't hurt it).
At that point you should get a menu that will at least tell you if the computer is 'alive'.A virus is possible culprit, but I suspect either the graphics driver/card, the hard drive boot sector corrupted, or Windows is confused. Sometimes Windows will crash then try to restore itself and this can lock the whole thing up. Try holding down F8 as you start the machine. This should bypass bad graphics driver and regular Windows to allow start in Safe Mode. If you can start in safe mode, it means you have not lost anything. You just need to tune the machine up (also note that if the hard drive boot sector is bad that still means you can get your data off it by plugging it into another computer).

Try observing the power supply fan at the back of the PC case when you press the power button.
If it does not move at all, the power supply could be defective.
If it spins for just a few seconds then stops, it is going into auto-shutdown (a safety feature). A defective processor fan or a defective component that is overloading the power supply could cause auto-shutdown.
If it continuously spins but screen is blank, there could be a problem withe video card or the video cable connector.

I'm confused by silverearth1 response to run a virus scan. How do you run a virus scan if you cant turn it on.
Call the warranty department. Sounds like a bad power supply or your PC overheated.

I have never owned a laptop, but did you try turning thr computer on and off. Also is the battery charged? You might just want to pop the battery out of the laptop, and then put it back in, and try turning it on again.

"We got the computer just after christmas"
Then it'll still be under warranty, take it back to the shop.
