Jesus was a well-known smart a**. Look at how snippy he got with his parents when he was a kid and ran away to proselytize or whatever. This was his major character flaw.
And anyway, only someone with a keen sense of irony could develop a cult by preaching love while also threatening eternal damnation. He could be kind of a jerk that way.

The "ROCK" that the church was built upon was not the man Peter, which is used in the catholic religion and many other religious bodies. The "rock" the church is built upon is the statement out of the mouth of Peter.
Jesus said literly to Peter, "You are a stone, a pebble, and upon THIS ROCK: the statement you just made that "I AM THE CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD", is the unfailing, unwavering rock the church is built upon!
Jesus had just asked his apostles "who do men say that I am", and Peter's answer was: thou art the Christ, the son of the living God" and then next was Jesus' remarks.
Peter does mean a little stone, but the real ROCK that the church is built upon is the statement from Peter's mouth.
Brother, how people can screw up a two car funeral!!

I don't think that Jesus was being sacastic.
Jesus was declaring that Peter would be the “rock” on which He would build His church. Jesus appears to be using a play on words. “You are Peter (petros) and on this rock (petra) I will build my church.” Since Peter’s name means rock, and Jesus is going to build His church on a rock – it appears that Christ is linking the two together. God used Peter greatly in the foundation of the church. It was Peter who first proclaimed the Gospel on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-47). Peter was also the first to take the Gospel to the Gentiles (Acts 10:1-48). In a sense, Peter was the rock “foundation” of the church.

No, Jesus knew that Peter's faith would be extremely strong after that rooster crowed, not to mention seeing Jesus resurrected from the dead just a few days later.
What I find odd is that Peter gets so little space in the Bible, especially compared to Paul. Where is Peter's gospel? Where are all of Peter's letters to the various churches?

Jesus did not call Peter The rock?
So the church is the Christian congregation which belongs to both God and Christ Jesus, who work together in the building of it. And who or what is the rock or foundation upon which it is built? According to the construction that Roman Catholic theologians place upon Matthew 16:18, that rock or foundation is the apostle Peter. In this connection note that God is referred to as “the Rock”. (Deut. 32:4) His kingdom is also referred to as a stone or rock. (Dan. 2:44, 45) Christ Jesus identified himself as the rock or cornerstone which the builders had rejected, and the apostle Paul bore similar testimony. (Matt. 21:42-46; Rom. 9:32, 33; 1 Cor. 10:4) And the apostle Peter shows that Christians are living stones, built, not upon himself, but upon Christ Jesus. “Coming to him as to a living stone, rejected, it is true, by men, but chosen, precious, with God, you yourselves also as living stones are being built up a spiritual house . . . For it is contained in Scripture: ‘Look! I am laying in Zion a stone, chosen, a foundation cornerstone, precious.’” (1 Pet. 2:4-6, NW)

Jesus was refering to himself. The word 'peter' is petros in Greek, and is only used once to mean 'a stone', whereas 'petra' which is the word that Jesus used for 'rock' is used almost always referring to Jesus as the Rock.

No I don't think HE was. He knew Peter and I think HE saw in Peter something that no other Person did. He knew Peter would deny Him, but Peter would be the one who at the end of the day would be the strongest

Jesus preached the protection of the weak and forgiveness. The last will become first and the first will become last. This is totally inline with christianity.
That failure on that morning humbled Peter and made him aware of his shortcomings, negating his pride.

Jesus saw the future of wat Peter was going to do. But He also saw that Peter was faithful to Him. Peter asked for forgivness unlike Judas Iscariot. If Judas had repented for his sin Jesus wud have forgiven him. Peter had repented at heart and had full faith in Jesus.
