Older dogs often get what's called cognitive dysfunction syndrome, a type of alzheimer's for dogs. There's all kinds of different symptoms they can get. It would be best for your dog if you took him to the vet, explained to the vet what's going on, because there are now meds that could possibly help him.

Maybe he's in pain and can't sleep. I have known people who can't stay still when they're in pain. Does he sleep in the daytime instead? Maybe he sleeps all day and is awake at night. Do you feed him at night? Maybe he's got an upset stomach. Try feeding him in the morning. Does he urinate more frequently? Maybe he's got a urinary infection and really needs to go out, so he's antsy. Lots of possibilities. Have him checked by the vet, and if he's OK, crate him at night or put up a child gate to keep him confined to one room downstairs. Stairs are not going to be good for his arthiritis, plus they're dangerous if his eyesight is failing.

at 15 your dog may be going senile, or his eye sight or hearing could be fading which causes a great deal of stress. Have him evaluated by a vet because at his age there are so many different issues that could cause this, many of which are very serious .

His time is coming close to an end. He is trying to find a place to go in peace, so he won't hurt you.
My old boy did the same thing, I found him 1 morning curled in a ball in a closet.
