I have a prescription for penicillin from my dentist, The second day I was taking it, I totally broke out in hives, red blotchy rash, felt like creepy crawlies were all over me making me scratch more. I was real dizzy and throwing up constantly.. I called my regular doctor, she said that I was having a small allergic reaction to the penicillin, but was safe to still take it and if my tongue started to swell to come in. Hell, at the rate I was going I would be dead my then! So I started cutting them in half and taking that much at a time. Not as dizzy and throwing up, just the rash and scratching all the time.
I look like I had the chicken pox. hehe I have heard of real bad reactions in people.
Had anyone else had this problem and if so did they also keep you on the penicillin or did they switch you do a different antibiotic, and how long did your symptoms last?

Penicillin can cause a severe reaction called an "anaphylactic shock."

This can DEFINITELY BE FATAL.

You must immediately stop taking that medicine and talk to your doctor. He can prescribe some meds to relieve your symptoms and also get you a different antibiotic that will not cause a reaction.

This is definitely a life threatening situation. Your doctor will tell you that you must NEVER take penicillin again.

ps one person suggested that MDs would not take you off penicillin because they dont want to be bothered writing a new prescription. Only a total moron would believe that! A doctor who acted that way would lose his license in a heartbeat...

Many have allergic reactions to Penicillin. Effects last for about 96 hrs. Doctor can prescribe another antibiotic.

When I was an infant I had a severe alergic reaction to penicillin. I went into convulsions and my throat started to close. They gave me a shot of benadryl (I think) and I came out of the seisure, but was on oxygen for a day or two after that. I now tell my doctors about my allergy and I'm usually prescribed a synthetic antibiotic, such as Erithromyacin.

Not personally, but my mom is allergic to penicillin. It is a by product of mold. They create it using mold and my mom is alleric to all types of mold. I never had a problem with penicillin myself but I wouldn't mess around if you are showing any signs of a reaction. If you are seeing symptoms on the outside....imagine what it is doing to your insides. I would ask your Dr to write you another perscription and keep away from penicillin

Yes it is, I trust you have contacted your G.P. and have taken him off the medication. He may swell especially around the eyes, Any kind of reaction is normally apparent after three or four days. Tonsillitis is horrible, (I know I had mine out, many years ago, but havent forgotten how painfull it is to have. I also had a reaction to Penicillin). This may sound "barking mad" but my mum used to boil Turnips which is a naturally strong antibiotic, you boil them until they become pulp and drink it like soup. I still do that now, when I am not feeling that great. Worth a try, just got to get your son to drink it. Good luck, wish him better.

One Amoxicillin caused the same rash, swelling (They had to use my license to see what I normally looked like). Initially, I was given double doses of steroids, but the severity of the allergic reaction eventually landed me in the Cardiac Care Unit.

I've worn a Medic Alert bracelet for anaphylactic reaction to all "cillans" & Keflex, for years.

Anaphylactic shock
"A sudden, severe allergic reaction characterized by a sharp drop in blood pressure, urticaria, and breathing difficulties that is caused by exposure to a foreign substance, such as a drug or bee venom, after a preliminary or sensitizing exposure. The reaction may be fatal if emergency treatment, including epinephrine injections, is not given immediately."

You did not have anaphylactic shock but rash-urticaria you have. You are lucky man, because anaphylactic shock is very, very serious complication in first hour after giving Penicillin and need urgent therapy at first adrenaline, oxygen, bronchodilatator, infusion,at last corticosteroid and antihistamines .
You need antihistamines, liquid, rest and physician control. In future you must consult your doctor of non-penicillin antibiotic.

STOP TAKING IT IMMEDIATELY!!!!

You are definitely allergic. Ask them for a different kind of antibiotic. Do not get anything that ends with -cillin. Amoxicillin is the same thing. There are all different kinds.

A lot of medical professionals will tell you to keep taking it, but its more a matter of convenience than concern about the side effects. They don't want to write you another prescription. Think about it, though. If a medication makes you sick, would you keep taking it?
