So, you can add your own sweetener. There are many health conscious people who do not want white, cane sugar in their drinks; an all-important consideration for diabetics.

In many areas of the U.S. liquid sugar is available because it mixes in better.

I do love Southern ice tea recipes which calls for the simple sugar to be mixed in while the tea is still hot. I happen to prefer Agave Syrup which is a healthier substitute for both sugar, honey and artificial sweeteners. It has a low -- 32gi -- glycemic index.

World War II is largely the cause. Many things changed about American tea during the War shortages. To begin with sugar was rationed and not readily available due to it being used both to feed calories to hungry soldiers and in explosive and weapons manufacturing.

Also, before WWII most iced tea in the united states (especaillly the American South) was green tea. However, when green tea supplies were cut off due to trade conflicts and later war in Asia, Americans switched to traditional english tea which hails from india and is black (orange pekoe).

real amercian iced tea( that is tea from the south) has plenty of sugar in it. Iced tea up north does not and you have to order sweet tea. Most people in the south just say tea and you know that is sweet iced tea. if we want hot tea we say hot tea and if we want unsweetened tea we say so. Come south and order some tea and you will see and have some of the best tea you ever drank
