Every dog we've ever had has run away, but now my mom wants another one. My dad doesn't and they've really been at odds about this. That being said, my mom usually gets her way whether we like it or not. I'm just worried that my dad won't love the dog if it comes and my mom will only get angrier at him. I don't think getting a dog is a good idea. Is there any way I can reason with her. We love dogs but we have such terrible luck with them.

My mom is very bad on following through on commitments. The responsibility for the dog will probably end up falling on my dad

Dogs are a big commitment and they need a lot of love and attention. If the dog isn't going to be a welcome member of the family by everyone, maybe you shouldn't get one. Maybe your mom wants a dog because she's lonely. Talk to her and see what her motivation is...

Getting a dog is not the actual problem here. Your parents don't get along and this is just one more way your Mom is going to escalate the problems between them. One of these days, she will push him beyond the limit. See if you can talk with her and explain that no one in the family wants to get attached to a dog and love it only to have it run away. Does someone in your household mistreat the dog? I've had a dog for years and if he gets off it's leash, just sits by the front door. It would never run away. With the tension that is already in the house, you don't need to add a puppy to this situation. Good luck, Sweetie.

Let your Mom get a Dog, but it must be a pup. Females are family oriented and less likely to run away. Your Mom must be responsible for it. Your Dad will take a liking to the pup sooner than you think. But you can also volunteer taking puppy for walks 'on a leash' and caring, training, and disciplining.

I think the choice is totaly up to you guys but with my dog, we got a microchip inserted somewhere into her and if anyone finds her and takes her to a humane society, they can find out all sorts of information on her.

Or something like that.

Your mother is an adult and should have a dog if she wants one. Your father dosn't have to love it.

Well if she's going to be the caretaker and responsible for it then allow her to.
