I've always assumed that honey is a healthy substitute for sugar because it's sold in health shops, but is it really?

But honey is a mixture of glucose and fructose, which are both types of sugar. It only contains traces of vitamins and minerals.

I still disagree with some of the responses.

"There is nothing specially healthy about honey. The traces of micronutrients it contains are too small to make any significant contribution to our diet."

Not a lot - especially if you are diabetic.

I prefer Agave Nectar.

Agave Nectar is a low glycemic index (32gi) natural sweetener from the agave plant. the light flavor does not interfere with any other flavors and it can be used in cooking. If you want to cut the intake of white sugar and sugar substitutes (which I personally consider to be legal poisons), it is a wonderful alternative.

It mixes quickly into both hot and cold drinks.

When using it in baking, you may have to experiment with your recipes, many cooks use 1-2 cup - 3/4 cups agave for every 1 cup sugar listed in a recipe. Begin with 3/4 cup for your first try. You can adjust the amount the next time.

Also, this is delicious on morning pancakes, waffles, and French Toast. I've even been known to use it as a dip for chicken fingers.

Here's a link to the kind I buy on amazon.com. It costs only $27.04 with free shipping.

Enjoy.

Oh yes they do! We rescued a feral/stray 18 months ago after spending 6 months taming it. When we brought it home and put it on high quality cat food (there was no crossing him over, he was living on garbage and hunting), he had the WORST gas and loud too! It took him about 3-4 weeks to adjust to the food and calm his guts down. He's now the sweetest cat ever, an indoor cat who forays into our secured back yard for a few minutes every morning and evening now that the weather is nicer, and he's beautifully healthy and has lovely glossy fur.

It's better for you than white sugar. Too much of any sweetener is bad for you. Honey actually contains a more complex sugar, so it enters your bloodstream more slowly. It is said to be a natural laxative and sleep aid.

Agave nectar is good, but HONEY is extremely healthy. It can even heal burns, bad burns. I know this from experience! Honey is very very good for you. try it :-D It's better to have raw honey though and to keep it uncooked. But no doubt it's better than white sugar!
