Every medication works differently person to person. My regimen is Oxycontin 40 mgs every 12 hours, and I just got switched from Oxy IR to OxyFast Solution, 1/2 mL every 6 hours if needed for breakthrough pain. The OxyFast is GREAT for the breakthrough pain. It is a 20 mg per mL solution that comes with a dropper to administer. You can mix it with juice, applesauce, or pudding or just take it by itself. (I mix mine with OJ, as it tastes pretty foul.) Within 10 minutes, I'm pain free. I like it a lot better than the Oxy IR capsules I was taking. These medications work wonderfully for me, (On a BAD day, my pain level is about a 1 or 2) but everyone is different, as I said. You should work with a pain management doctor ro find the medication that gives you the most pain relief with the fewest side effects. They will really work with you and figure out what the best regimen for you is-- that's the greatest thing about pain docs: they REALLY care about your comfort and ability to function, and will genuinely make an effort and take the time to wrok with you.

This isn't the professional opinion you are looking for, but the fact that you are going online and asking this question because you fear a doctor will look at you as an addict says to me you are well on your way to becoming an addict. Your doctor knows what he is talking about and the dangers of getting medications from somewhere other than a pharmacy are pretty big. You don't know what grade of medication you will receive, what kinds of other harmful fillers might be in there or what to expect at all. A doctor has been trained to know the risks and benefits and to make smart recommendations to you. If you're in pain you need to explore options that will help you heal - not kill the braincells that are responsible for feeling pain.

this is a question you have to ask your medical doctor. Only the doctor knows your medical history and is the only person who can write a prescription.
