I raise exotic parrots so with the left over seed and such from the bottom of the cage I too feed the wild birds in my area. I use to fight with the squirrels all the time cause I thought they were eating all the seed. Untill I noticed they work together. The birds are only interested in what they find as worthy of eating and the squirrels eat what they want. They all get feed and it's a wonder to watch them get along. They even eat while the other is there. So instead of getting upset I feed both the squirrels and birds. I think I got upset more than the birds did. I can't say if this helped you, just my personal experience.

www.drollyankees.com this is by far the best bird feeder you can get if you have a squirrel problem. When you check this website out, be sure to watch the demo video. I've seen it work first hand. It is completely harmless and absolutely hilarious to watch. The down side of this feeder is you will pay more than an arm and a leg for it. It works by the weight of the squirrel bearing down on the feeder. Once the squirrel gets on it, it spins around very fast and throws the squirrel off of it. I've seen a squirrel run as fast as it could after it happened to it. Needless to say, he never came back....good luck.

I'm in the same situation, and I'm the wife. Don't know about you but we have a pecan tree and a palm tree in our back yard. It's like a zoo back there. The squirrels are always on the ground digging little holes burying pecans. Then there's a little community of sparrows ranging from about a little over 100 of the little guys. There everywhere. And my birdfeeders, just sparrows. Never any other bird. Just those plain brown sparrows and the squirrels.

P.s. You can't walk outside in flip flops with a pecan tree and the pocket pecan traps the squirrels make for you. It's like walking on marbles. There's pecans rolling around everywhere.

Ha, try to outsmart a squirrel. We have a backyard full of them. We feed the birds, and they will outsmart you every time by getting in the feeders. We buy cracked corn, and put it on the ground for them and also the doves, like to eat from the ground, but it is amusing to watch them outsmart my husband. He has trimmed all of the low branches off our pines, and hung the feeders on a thin wire, and they can still get in. Climbing down that thin wire. Relax and enjoy them. But seriously, just put some food on the ground for them, it may satisfy them. We have one, who will come up, put his paws on the patio door and look in, if there is nothing out there for him. But right now, we don't see many. They are back in the woods, making more squirrels to invade this coming winter.

Call your local branch of the State Wildlife Dept. They may have traps available to borrow that will catch alive and they can be released far away in some park.

If this won't pan out you may have to resort to a pellet rifle.

BTW, WD40 is indeed moderately toxic. I would try slicking the base with olive oil instead.

maybe u can also feed the squirrels by just placing a piece of bread everyday outside the house...also u could use a airtight container to store your bird food so that the squirrels cant eat the bird food...

You sound like an evil couple. Why don't you just enjoy the squirrels? They're so cute. If you throw food out for the birds, how can you expect only birds to eat it? That doesn't make sense if squirrels live in your area.

The things people get upset about are just absurd, this being yet another example of idiocy.

Human Hair clipping always works for me. Also, the pole that the bird feeder is on is lubed with wd-40. Its completely non-toxic

Squirrels are fun until they start humping on your garden fence, at all other times they're cute. Would love a webcam in your garden when your missus goes on a mission,lol..

Someone told me that mothballs discourage rodents. Try hanging a few mothballs in a bag on the feeders and see what happens.
