Because Phinehas upheld God's standard of righteousness (thou shalt not commit adultery) and honored God through obedience. And that is the reason Moses was taken to heaven. He obeyed God and destroyed (vexed) the Midianites.

Both saw that the Midianites had seduced Israel into sinning with their seductive women and wine. You will recall that the prophet Balaam told them there was "no iniquity in Israel" so they had to get them to sin in order for God's strength to depart and become "defeatable."

How often we hear people presenting God as someone who does not uphold His high and noble law. Love, Love, Love,Love comes from their lips as they seduce people into thinking God will lovingly spare the wicked and unrepentant.

But God is too wise to let sin reign in His universe. Otherwise it would be HELL, just like our sinful world is today.
