I work for an accounting firm and went through an exhausting tax season - so we've emailed once in a while. My husband and I might move back up North. Any advice for making new friends where ever I'll end up and also how to keep my old friends

You're in good company. Plenty, and I mean plenty, of New Yorkers have moved to North Carolina. If you live near Raleigh, or any other big NC city, I'm sure you will run into New Yorkers. You should invite your old friends a couple at a time to visit the North Carolina beaches at Cape Hatteras. I heard the beach in NC are spectacular.

A good way to keep old friends is through phone calls, internet, and yes even snail mail. To meet new people try joining a church, taking a class (educational, dance, etc), or just have a social gathering and invite the neighbors. Military people are the best ones to ask since they move around a lot. Also try getting people from home to send you things that remind you of home (a shirt from a fav. restaurant, if not food itself) Kind of like a NY care package.

Making friends in NC is no different than making friends anywhere, except it is probably easier! Now that you are past tax season, maybe join a special intrest club or group. If you are so inclined, church is a good place to meet people (especially here in the south)

One thing NOT to do: Please don't tell the natives how much better, cheaper, more enlightened, blah blah everything was in NY!

First try getting close with the people you work with, or neighbors, and even people of some local shops around where you live...and with keeping contact with old friends you can do it by e-mail, postcards, or telephone
