You can get Vitamin D though foods such as:
- Fish liver oils, like as cod liver oil, 1 Tbs. (15 mL) provides 1,360 IU
- Fish, such as:
Catfish, 3 oz provides 425 IU
Salmon, cooked, 3.5 oz provides 360 IU
Mackerel, cooked, 3.5 oz, 345 IU
Sardines, canned in oil, drained, 1.75 oz, 250 IU
Tuna, canned in oil, 3 oz, 200 IU
Eel, cooked, 3.5 oz, 200 IU
- One whole egg, 20 IU
- Shiitake mushrooms, one of a few natural sources of vegan vitamin D (in the form of ergosterol vitamin D2).
Often foods such as milk, yogurt, margarine, oil spreads, breakfast cereal, pastries, and bread are fortified with vitamin D2 and/or vitamin D3. It will probably say on the nutrition facts label if Vitamin D is included.
Also, you can take a Vitamin D supplement. Some supplements are combined with Calcium, Magnesium, Magnese, and other supplements that work together to prevent/treat osteopenia or osteoperosis.
Be careful, though, because too much Vitamin D can be toxic.

You get lots of vitamin D through UV rays. 30-40 min a day should do the trick. Don't forget sunscreen (it won't influence your vitamin D uptake).

Vit D is better absorbed when it is taken with dairy products; that is why it is added to milk in many countries. Take your pill with a glass of milk, try to get 15-20 min of sun per day on a patch of skin that has no sunblock on it.
