A Boeing 747-400 has a max fuel capacity of 57,285 US gallons. The price for Jet A fuel the airlines pay is usually a negotiated volume discount price, however you can get Jet A prices for any airport to do a for a ball park figure here:
http://www.airnav.com/fuel/local.html
As of Feb 21 , 2005 (it may cost more now), the price range for Jet A was $2.64 to $4.46, with an average cost of $3.26. Therefore ...
57,285g x $3.36= $186,749.10
The average cost of fueling up a Boeing 747 is $186,749.10 ... unreal eh?!

More than filling with jet-a, because petrol over here is higher priced. Although the engines will run on anything that that will burn and you can pump through a tube, if using petrol, I would use unleaded, because the lead will not burn and will coat the hot sections. Be advised also that the higher flash point of petrol will not carry you as far as jet fuel, so be prepared and get more fuel.
Don't know about 747, but Learjet 25 has a conversion chart in the POH to tell how much gas to use to replace the jet fuel if jet fuel is not available.

Boston, Mass. Jet fuel as of 5/16 was 4.54 per gallon.
since a 747-400 holds 52785 gallons,that comes to $ 239643.90.
(Yes, WOW!)Now,that is retail. most airlines have contracts for fuel, which are negotiated. No one drives up in a 747 and says "fill it up."

Jet aircraft use kerosene, not petrol as fuel. But sorry I can't tell you the cost. All I know is that flying generates more greenhouse gas than any other means of transport. If you drive your own car, take a ship or a train, it uses much less fuel than taking a plane.
