Synthetic progesterones and estrogens(female hormones).
They prevent the entry of sperm into the uterus and if at all fertilization takes place, they prevent the implantation of the embryo on the uterine wall. This prevents pregnancy.

Generally, ovarian hormones like Oestrogen and Progesterone are given. This two hormones applied prevent the secretion of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary lobe, which in turn prevents the maturation of primordial follicles and thereby prevent ovulation.
NOTE: Mifepristone drug is used as morning after pill.

For a woman to ovulate normally, there is a cycle where the hormones rise and fall. Taking the pill prevents the normal hormonal cycle and, therefore, ovulation.
