Right now I have a 1995 Firebird. It gets horrible gas mileage, it's bad in bad weather, it has no storage space, it's not that fast, and it's starting to fall apart. And Kelly Blue Book says that it's only worth like $4500. I want to get a new pick-up or small SUV that'll be better in the bad weather and probably get better gas mileage. I'm not really strapped for cash, but I don't drive that much and it's going to, at least, double my insurance if I get a new vehicle so it's not really going to save me any money. I've had the car for 9 years, but I'm done with my sports car phase. What do you think?

If you buy used...then insurance will be less, but you usually get a higher interest rate and a shorter loan period. I was in the same situation as you with a 94 ford Taurus. I just bought a new Toyota Corolla. Great gas mileage...will drive great in this midwest snow....and was great priced. Good luck.

Why buy new and pay higher insurance, pay all that depreciation of the first year, etc? Just for the new car smell?

Find one that is 1 yr old, as a demo, has 20k or less miles. You will save money from insurance, to cost.

You lose money buying a new car unless you run that car into the ground after its paid for. Cause the depreciation from the first yr alone is impossible to get back.

Check out used cars that are 1 yr old and compare the prices to new, you'll see what I mean.

Also realize any numbers for MPG on a sticker on a new car, subtract at least 3 mpg to get a more accurate number. Newer rules for those numbers is coming out soon, but for now, just know to remove some.

If it no longer suits your lifestyle and you've got the money, then go ahead and get something else. 9 years is a pretty long time to own a car -- you've already shown a lot more discipline than most of the people on this board!

The only suggestion I'd have is to look at used rather than brand new cars, especially if you're shopping domestic since they depreciate so much.

if your drive is not that bad, then gas mileage is really not a huge issue.
how much money in upkeep do you have to put into it, if it is just routine maintenance, maybe not worth it to change cars, considering insurance and all.
