It sounds boring but do the permanent stuff in nuetral. Add color with paint, towels etc. You never know when you might want to sell and nuetral sells to a bigger audience. Plus you can change things up by repainting and changing towel colors every so often.

If the bathroom is a general use bathroom, I think it would be best to paint the walls something more neutral or less color intensive and then use accesories and towels to bring in the color. When it comes to bathrooms, I get my inspiration from towels, not general use towels, but the decorative towels. The next time you're out in your favorite department store, go to the home department and see if you can find something that inspires you.

Completely agree with the previous poster -- do the permanent stuff neutral. Stone and wood tend to stay in style.
Paint a color that you love. Since it's big, you can even go with a darker color on the wall -- especially if you keep the trim white.
You don't necessarily need a theme. Just choose accessories that you really enjoy. If you're having trouble getting started, choose one inspiration piece. Find artwork you love (or towels, or a piece of furniture or a light fixture) and go from there. Artwork can lead you to make color choices and furniture can suggest a style.
Consider upkeep and cleaning in every choice you make. Undermount sinks make it easier to clean, but limit your choices -- that sort of thing.

I just recently got a new bathroom set. Bed Bath and Beyond has great ideas. You can get all the accesories in the same place. While you there you can mix and match the accesories with the curtains and such

I love a bold shade of gray on the walls, then white on the doors. It's a really clean, sharp look. Then you can change the look whenever you want because it goes with so many colors. Red, yellow, turquoise, dark blues, etc. I've had one of my bathrooms in this shade, and I never get tired of it!

My sister did her bathroom in a sun yellow with (only a few) green accents. I give her a bad time because it's the happiest room in the house. But done right. It really is pretty.

depends on who is going to use it.....I like a sky blue, light pink or just a hint of mint. Then I'd choose a shower curtain I liked with flowers, and then choose the towels, rugs and curtains in those colors, then add pictures and accessories to match (or bright white).

This is just an idea. But if you are interested in something that stands out, there are some ideas here for an art deco bathroom:

It looks amazing but also expensive.
