A few may feel it ironic that Jehovah's Witness publications have actually written somewhat favorably about adult stem cell research (see Awake! of 11/22/02). Many or most Jehovah's Witnesses are quite comfortable with the idea of cross-matching, donating, and accepting such stem cells from bone marrow, for example.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not anti-medicine or anti-technology, and they do not have superstitious ideas about some immortal "soul" literally encapsulated in blood. Instead, as Christians, the Witnesses seek to obey the very plain language of the bible regarding blood.

These bible commands are post-Mosaic Law and explicitly apply to the Christian congregation. Because these commands were written by the apostles themselves, these verses have a special name: the Apostolic Decree:

(Acts 15:20) Write them [the various Christian congregations] to abstain from things polluted by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled [the meat of which would contain blood] and from blood.

(Acts 15:28,29) For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to you, except these necessary things, 29 to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled [the meat of which would contain blood] and from fornication. If you carefully keep yourselves from these things, you will prosper.

Perhaps pro-blood activists (and/or anti-Witness critics) ignore the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses' religious beliefs apply to whole blood and the four intact components which approximate whole blood. Witnesses tolerate the use of any minor blood fraction, so if there is some targeted need then a Witness is likely to accept a targeted treatment derived from plasma, platelets, and/or red/white cells.

Actually, the Witnesses have great reason for refusing transfusions, after all in the Holy Bible, it does say, "the soul itself is in the Bood." But, not even that but the fact that NEW Blood put into a persons body ISN'T WORKING as anything but a FILLER. This new blood won't carry oxygen for hours!

A better use would be "non-blood expanders" that can be used on any blood type (universal) does not require a donor (i.e., will never run out) and WILL CARRY OXYGEN TO THE BRAIN AND HEART IMMEDIATELY!

I oppose stem cell research, I think there are better ways to research things than by killing babies. We protest the use of animals for product testing and people are okay with that but when asked if we are for or against stem cell research and your answer is no you are to some people a horrible person. I do not believe in abortion, I do not believe in taking and killing any lives for the sake of others. I also do not see the correlation to the Jehova's Witnesses refusal to accept blood. It is a Biblical law that is followed. We are adults and allowed to make our own decisions and no offence if I allow myself to break God's law to "save my life" I have no life when this earth is done. I would rather follow God than men and Jehova has said not to accept blood. Nuff said.

What does one have to do with the other. Again, stem cell research is not a problem, only fetal stem cell research in that it supports the abortion industry. And the ban is on federal funding not the research itself. And the ban does not apply to cell strains already in the research projects. Talk about your religion of death!

I oppose the kind of "stem cell research" in which people are killed in order to obtain their stem cells. The only way this could be compared to the JW's is if they opposed blood transfusions in which someone was killed in order to obtain their blood -- in which case I would join them in their opposition.

Obviously, most of the christians here are unaware that most of the fetal tissue for stem cell research came from fertility clinics. Do they oppose those too? It sickens me that christians willingly, happily, condemn tens of thousands of people to painful, agonizing death because of their smug (and false) sense of moral superiority.

No, it is not. Because blood transfusions are given by voluntary adults who choose to sacrifice a portion of their blood for the greater good, and walk out of the office. If someone chooses to reject that will deal with the consequences.

Stem cells are taken from the aborted fetuses of children who did not have the chance to defend themselves or the life they neither asked for or had a chance to experience ....

It's scary to see how society , hiding behind "freedom of religion" concepts lets people suffering from schizoid delusional mental disorder endanger their life and the life of others instead of enforcing available medical treatment of their condition...
