Congrats on the new pup!! Unfortunately, all of the responses
you have gotten so far have been for crappy brands. The following brands you should stay far far away from:
Eukanuba
Iams
Science Diet
Kibbles n Bits
Pedigree
Purina, or any of its forms
Ol Roy
ANY grocery store brand
Most wet/canned foods
Eagle Pack...uses too much ground corn gluten
Royal Canin...same as above
Nutro...crappy ingredients for the price

...And, despite what many would tell you these days, RAW is NOT a healthy diet for dogs. Most do not realize the dangers of this diet, and think they are doing something amazing for their dog, when really their dogs are in true danger. Just a heads-up.

Basically, read the ingredients on the bag. You want to avoid grains such as Corn, Wheat, Ground Rice, Brewers Rice, and go with something listing a Meat as the first product. And Meat Meal is not the same as the meat product itself. If it says Chicken or Turkey, go for it. But if the second ingredient is corn or wheat or ground rice, another to stay away from.
Also avoid by-products in any form. Meat and Bone Meal is a bad sign as well.

Here are some wonderful kibbles to check out:
Merrick
Canidae
California Naturals
Nature's Recipe
By Nature Organics
AvoDerm
Natural Balance
Castor and Pollux
...Some of the above are available at your local petco or petsmart, and others you have to buy online or in a small, private pet feed store.

My top choice is always Merrick...the best choice on the planet!!

By the way, I sincerely hope you do not plan to breed your little boy. Pekes have a large host of health issues that have to be addressed before breeding!! If you had not paid attention when you bred before, it is nice that you doing that now, but NO DOG, pregnant or not, will do well on crappy brands like Pedigree or any I listed above.

No cheap brands. Make sure it says puppy on the dog food bag because puppy food has extra nutrients in it that make them grow. Also sometimes dogs can be picky or even allergic to some dog foods. So go to a Pet store and ask them what they recommend then just get a small bag to see if he likes it. Good luck!

Quality foods:

-Innova
-Canidae
-Eagle Pack Holistics (regular Eagle Pack uses corn-- stay away from that)
-Solid Gold
-Flint River Ranch
-California Natural
--a quality food will contain no corn, soy, artificial colors, by-products, filler grains, BHT/BHA, ethoxiquin, etc. There are other great brands out there, but these are some of the best-known and highest quality.

Foods that the companies and/or vet clinics would like you to believe are premium foods but that are really full of junk ingredients:

-Iams
-Eukanuba
-Science Diet
-Pedigree
-Beneful
-Anything you can buy at Wal Mart/discount store/supermarket.

Do an internet search on what's really in dog food, and what should/shouldn't be in your pets' food. Don't be blindly led to believe that fancy commercials, sponsorships, and pretty packaging mean you are getting a quality product. For example, Eukanuba/Iams used to be a quality food. Over the past decade, they have switched to cheaper ingredients and the food has plumeted in quality. I would never feed this to any of my dogs. Science Diet is low in quality and extremely overpriced. I used to work at a vet clinic and I saw how cheap this food was for the clinic to purchase, and how big of a markup was made at the clinic. For the price vets can purchase the food, it can't be a good product, not to mention the ingredients are low-quality and actually contribute to many health problems. Unless your dog has a severe dietary problem and absolutely needs a prescription diet, you can purchase a top-quality food like those listed above for the price of Science Diet and get a much better food for your money.

many dog foods don't have the proper nutrients for dogs. They say they do but they are made up of the left overs that people won't eat. I would talk to a vet before you get the dog and think up a good diet plan with them. I did that with my vet and now my dog takes multiple vitamins and minerals that the dog food didn't supply. It sounds like a lot of work but it keeps your dog happy and healthy. So basically i would talk to the vet first.

Try All Natural dog food, or Organic dog food. I've heard people having alot of luck with feeding there pets this.
I would not recommend commercial pet food for a while still on count of the pet food recall. Good luck

Try a good quality dry food like Wellness or Anova (Science Diet is okay). Stick to dry, it helps with teething and keeps your pup's gums and teeth clean. I'd suggest a type specific to toy/small breeds. These will have a smaller size kibble just right for your puppy.

I've been so upset about the recall on so many foods, that I now feed "by Nature Organics". The kibble is very small in size and when you sock it, it's just like meat. My puppy is doing very well on it. Congratulation on your new puppy. Best of luck;^)

With the current recall on dog and cat foods, I would steer clear of any wet (canned) food. I would recommend either Eukanuba or Science diet puppy formula.

I’ve always feed my dog a brand of Purina dog food (dry). When she was a puppy, she just got Puppy Chow

Science Diet is the dog food most recommended by vets. I have 2 dogs, one puppy, one senior, and they're both on Science Diet. I swear by it, as do most of my friends.
AND Science Diet was the only premium brand not involved in the recall garbage! lucky me! Enjoy your new puppy!
