what can possibly happen if global warming gets very serious? because i was reading this story in class. it was about a girl who was like us. and when she had grand children, they had to wear protective gear such as goggles, suits, gloves, ect just to protect themself from the everyday sun. i thought that sounded very misserable and i was just wondering if it is possible that it could be like that or somewhat like that for my grandchilidren.

This guy Joseph Romm (former assistant secretary of the US Dept. of Energy and expert in clean energy and global warming) wrote a book called "Hell and High Water" which answers your question. The Hell part refers to the temperature increase, and the High Water refers to the sea level rise if we don't reduce our carbon emissions significantly starting within the next decade. Some consequences if we don't:

"Super Hurricanes" will become commonplace. Hurricanes like Katrina but worse hitting the Gulf Coast several times every year.

The Greenland Ice Sheet will melt into the ocean, causing a 20 foot sea level rise. Eventually ice sheets in Antarctica will do the same, causing an eventual 80 foot sea level rise. This will make hundreds of millions of people homeless.

There will be serious droughts and floods worldwide.

There will be feedback loops such that global warming may rise out of control. For example, as arctic ice melts less sunlight is reflected by the ice and more is absorbed by the dark ocean, causing a greater temperature rise which causes more ice to melt which causes greater temperature rise, and so on. There are several such feedback loops.

Basically wearing protective gear will be the least of our problems if we don't get global warming under control soon.

Nano's answer (the first one), mentions the ad with the man on the train track, it's called 'Train' - you can watch it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjlJ_CS_xWw another one in the series is called 'Tick' which is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECuAJtSl-dw

Turning to your question. Global warming is a serious and very real problem, the consequences of which are already evident across the planet. Fortunately the scenario depicted in the book you read isn't an accurate one.

Looking ahead to when your grandchildren are around the world will have warmed by one or two degrees celsius. To see what this would be like imagine that everyone on the planet moved to a country which was a little warmer then where they are now. For many people these warmer temperatures will be quite pleasant, it's the African and Asian nations which are going to be the worst hit, Europe and the US are well placed to mitigate against the worst effects of global warming.

The book sounds like it was more about depletion of the ozone layer or some other atmospheric change that resulted in more harmful ultraviolet and infrared light reaching us from the sun; this is something different to global warming.

About 20 years ago we were destroying the protective ozone layer through the use of CFC's and other gases, these were found in aerosols, fridges and the like. We banned the use of these gases and since then the ozone layer has begun to repair itself. We've mended the planet once already and there are schemes being considered that will mend the planet again. Hopefully when your children and grandchildren are around we'll have put right the damage we've caused and will have learned from our mistakes.

The world has not seen such an evil indoctrination of youth since Mao in China or the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany.

The story you read is fiction and propaganda and you should conduct research as to why this is so. Please, don't believe the lies of the ignorant parroting the of the propaganda regarding global warming. Global warming (and cooling) are natural phenomenon and man does not cause it nor can it effect it anymore than they can turn on and off the sun, the true cause of our atmospheric changes.

Remember, from the beginning of time man has been telling tales of global catastrophes and doom / end of the world scenarios. Global warming is a religion to these people and religions will use myths and lies to get people to believe in their false gods and prophecies.

Global cooling and the coming ice age was hyped in the 1970s. Global warming is the new junk science promoted and hyped because ever increasing dollars are tossed to this junk science, largely on the basis of the propaganda spewed by Al Gore and other celebrities (non of which are scientists) and your pathetic teacher who sadly teaches you lies like the Hitler Youth leaders in Nazi Germany.

People will look back at this junk science decades from now and shake their heads at how stupid and gullible people were to believe in this nonsense. Hopefully mankind will not give in to this nonsense and tens / hundreds of millions of people in Africa, Asia and South America will not die due to the draconian measures the global warming zealots want to impose on the people of third world nations.

Consider this there have been many movies made like day after tomorrow. they all speak of different ways in which global warming could end life on Earth. Now to the real truth the hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger each year due to the pollution we as people pump into the air from cars, cigarettes, aerosol cans and the list goes on. Now if we allow this to keep going on people under the age of around 40 will possibly have to live life during the night with in 30 years approx. as the daytime will be to hot to walk outside. I don't mean to scare you but have you ever seen what happens to an ant when you shine the sun on it under a magnifying glass. then think of the hole in the Ozone layer as a magnifying glass ( as the Ozone layergets thinner the sun's ray get hotter) and people as ants. So why don't Governments doing anything? that's easy look how old they are now. most of them will be dead in 30 years so why would they care about you?

I believe it's very possible that your grandchildren will live in circumstances that we can't even imagine today. Goggles to protect from the sun's rays, gas masks to allow them to breathe fresh air, and an inability to find enough clean drinking water might all be issues they'll deal with every day of their lives.
And when your grandchildren climb up on your lap and ask, "WHY, Grandpa and Grandma? You KNEW global warming was destroying our planet. You KNEW there was a delicate ecological balance between man, plants and animals necessary to our basic survival on Earth. WHY didn't you try to do something about instead of squandering all of the Earth's precious resources?? WHY, Grandpa and Grandma??" -RKO- 05/26/07

Your grandchildren along with everyone else's grandchildren might have to learn to adapt to hotter situations at some point in the future yes. "There is ongoing political and public debate regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences." Even though our scientists are finding out more and more about global warming every day, the reality of the situation is pretty dismal so we are thinking of a way to avoid it entirely. If the day comes where protective gear is fashionable will be a sad one indeed.

one time i saw this commercial. a man standing on the train track, the train comes. he simply step aside. then wuts behind him terrorized me. it was a small little kid.

wut it says is global warming doesnt affect us much today. but it WILL be a big time problem for our children later.

and within the last 10 years, we already have the hottest years in history. so just imagine the next century or so, how much the weather and climates will change. and we already witnessing how weird the weather can get these days.

so "wearing protections" like u mentioned might sound miserable but its very possible.

i would say it will be more like living in the early 1700's. the weather and storms will destroy everything and there will be no elctric or high teck gear, we will have to start all over and i just hope that by then they think of something better that will not destroy our planet. Like mabey everything run on air or butter mabey even corn flakes...

HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Brainwashing such young, impressionable minds.

If the stupid liberals actually believed in Global Warming the way THEY describe it, the sun rays WILL NOT be any worse in the future than they are now, because according to them, the Sun doesn't play a role in global warming. To them it is 100% MAN MADE CO2. Its all lies.
