Infectious mononucleosis, is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). Once infected you will carry the virus for the rest of your life. EBV is believed to be the cause of a disease that can occur later in life that is similar in some ways to mono- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) It is also known as Chronic Epstein-Barr Virus (CEBV) or Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Unlike mono, the chronic forms don't get better.
Mono makes you very tired and can cause a lot of other symptoms and can take as long as 6 months to recover. The recurrence of chronic symptoms can last a lifetime and be difficult to manage. Usually it is no big deal, but you don't want to be one of the unlucky ones, so avoid as much as possible activities that involve the possible exchange of saliva with others. No drinking from the same glass, passing a joint, etc.!
1st link is on mono, the second is on CFS.
