You dont usually take the hook out cut the line on a snapper . There is a way to get the hook out but I wouldnt recommend it because you could get bit. Let the turtle bite a stick and pin his jaw down and remove the hook . BUT ITS DANGEROUS and I wouldnt try it unless you know a bit about them..

Its safest to cut the line and the hook will rust out

here is Mason string in this pic its the white colored roll.

Mason line is a strong white line used for trot line sets. Real good for heavy duty applications.
To get the hook out of a snapping turtles mouth... well, after the turtle is dead, and wait a while... it's easy. A little harder while he's still kicking. I would talk to him and say "Hold still and this won't hurt a bit!"

Yep. Mason line/string/twine is thinnish white stuff. If someone told you to put a hook on a length of mason line to catch turtles, they meant for soup, you take the hook out after you've gotten the meat out of the shell. Cut the line if you like your fingers, and aren't making soup. (Also, don't use regular fishing hooks if you're putting out set lines for turtles, a good sized turtle will just straighten them out... you'll want small stump hooks. Whats a stump hook? Find one here: http://www.fishnetco.com/mustad.htm#No.%2095160 )

Anyway, there you go. (If you're not looking for soup, you'd be better off going to a pet store or a breeder, even if they don't have snapping turtles in stock, they can most likely order you one.)
