In general it is expensive. When I was 16 which was 5 almost 6 years ago, I was going to get a car but decided not to because I couldn't afford insurance and up keep. I was going to be given a 1996 Ford Taurus GL wagon, blue, 6 cyclinder engine, and insurance cost for me with a good student discount would still cost almost $5000 per year. If the car is a sports car or as the engine gets bigger, the insurance prices go up. As the level of coverage increase price goes way up.
If the 16 year old has an idea of what car they will have, try some of the online quotes with some auto insurance companies.

It really all depends on the type of vehicle you are going to be driving.
If you're driving a Mercedes SL65 AMG it's going to be a lot more than if you are driving a 15 year-old Honda.
There is no "standard" rate despite what some people may tell you. When you go to sign up for insurance you will be under your parent(s) and make sure they mention if you took drivers ed or if you have good grades in school because there will be a discounted rate.
Good luck and stay safe!

Should? or does?
It SHOULD only slightly more than it would for anyone else as they shouldn't be judged before they've had a chance to prove themselves. but the insurance companies don't see it that way. it does cost a 16yr old new driver an INSANE amount, but there are a lot of factors, like what kind of car, level of insurance, male or female. even color of the car and the number of doors factor in. find an insurance company in your area and get a quote.

The cost of vehicle insurance depends on 1. type and age of car; 2. your age; and 3. place you reside. They all count!
If you're young, insurance will be higher; old, lower.
If you live in a high-crime rate city, insurance will be higher; low-crime rate, lower.
If your car is new, your insurance will be higher; old car, lower.
In addition, if you ever had car accident, insurance will be higher.

Your parents will have to get it for you, since you are under 18 and are not legal to sign a contract. It's going to be a hefty insurance payment every month/ like 150-200 per month if not more.

welllllll .. it depends.. usually you will start paying a little much since you will be young. also depends on the type of car and how much horse power you got... usually it will cost around 1200-1500 a year... but since you are a student, you can always send the insurance company a copy of your grades if they are good.. they drop a lot of money down when you do that.. i tried it before.. also, depending on your insurance company, you can always ask for ways to take money off

It will depend on your parent or legal guridian's past driving record since you dont have a driving history as well as what part of the country you live in, the rates are really influenced by what region you live in. They may also take your gpa into account . That being said the rate here for my kid was 150.00 per month. but after her first accident it doubled.
