I understand that she's most likely "giving them to me as presents", but ít's frustrating the hell out of me. It's gotten to where she brings in at least one dead animal a day (most often a rabbit) and leaves it beside my desk. Sometimes she'll decide she's hungry and eat on it, which is much worse since then I have to clean up a half eaten dead rabbit. Also, there are times when she even brings in *alive* animals. Once, she brought in a living bird and LET IT LOOSE in the house. She's even brought in an alive LIZARD! I realize there's probably no way I can stop her from doing this since it's instinct, but I was hoping someone might have some ideas anyway.

Don't let him get out the house unless you are there with him.

They love catching animals and I don't think you will be able to stop it. I understand your frustration especially since these animals are being bought inside your house. I wasn't impressed to find a dead rabbit with the head eaten off on my door mat first thing in the morning. To make it worse my cat left it in view of my pet rabbit!

She is showing you that she can take care of you, not just a present. It is in her nature and it probably will not stop if she is not very young (its already a habit with her).
Try limiting her outside access and get rid of the "doggie door" or however she gets back inside. Its easier to open the door for her and make her drop it before shes in rather than cleaning up every day. And still expect her to get past you a few times with a "guest". But its in her instinct, you can't really change it, she loves you and is trying to take care of you.

Good luck!

I recall when I was growing up in rural Kansas we had a cat that did the very same thing! LOL!! I'm afraid there is no way to break her from doing that...just wait till she brings in an alive rat...OOOOHHH, talk about jump on chairs screaming your head off!

Yours is pretty funny...a live bird! LOL!! I would just stop letting her in the house and keep her outiside since she is a very outdoorsy type cat. It's probably the only way to keep your sanity...LOL!

You keep your cat inside. Cats destroy native wildlife.

Domestic cats are not a part of natural ecosystem. A single individual free-ranging cat may kill 100 or more birds and mammals per year. Scientists in Wisconsin estimate that cats kill at least 7.8 million birds per year in that state alone. Even cats with bells on their collars kill birds and small mammals.

This is a cat's nature. If you don't want to deal with it the only thing you can do is get rid of your cat. I don't suggest you do this because I love my cat and wouldn't get rid of her for any reason. I also would not make it an indoor only cat because you'd be depriving your cat what it needs to be happy. You just have to learn to deal with it.

well my indoor outdoor cats used to use my garage as their little treasure trove. they stashed all their kills in my garage. one day i was outside and my kitty came walking up with a dead bird so i took it from him and started to dig a hole. he sat there an watched. i then burried the poor birdie right there in front of my cat. He hasn't bought me another animal since then or left any in my garage. I guess he sorta got his feelings hurt taht i wasn't proud of him ! I have had neighbors tell me though that my cat has left them birdies on their doorsteps.

I am so sorry yet so happy that you are blessed with a cat that loves you enough to share. She is also a proud cat because she is actually bragging that she is a good hunter.
The live animals are because she wants YOU to share in her hunt and does not understand why the human does not hunt prey like her. Cats are so wise and wonderful.
Sadly...because it would be pure torture for you to try and keep her inside. Once a cat goes out, there is no stopping it!
No, sorry, the only thing you can do is smile and praise her for the good hunter that she is.

Only way i can think of is not letting him outside. we had a cat who always brought dead birds and left them on the door step for us, i dont know that theres any way to break that, its just a cat thing.

Make her drop it before she comes inside. That is what I had to do with my cats (I have 3). Now they just leave my presents at the door. Attractive I know but at least the mess is outside.

Your cat is a huntress. Keep the door closed, and make her meow to be let in. Check through the window that she doesn't have any presents for you. If she does, don't let her in.

Fortunately, the rabbits and birds will be gone by fall, and you will have a winter of peace from the varmints.
