Why would anyone think the US is a great place to come to today?

America ended 30 years ago only fools don't know it. I don't see any Dutch, Swedish, Swiss, etc. walking around. I only see uncultured people and criminals from Central America. Are those the people dying to come here? Central AMerica has the HIGHEST crime rates ON EARTH. I don't consider that America's PERSONAL debt being the highest on the planet ( 18 000 PER PERSON) as a good reason for being called the richest nation. It doesn't help that America has more criminals in jail than any other nation on earth. The problem: Americans are simply too UNEDUCATED.

1) Actually, the time period you speak of was one in which people were complaining about the non-white races as well, such as Irish and Italian immigrants.

Yes, non-white, according to popular definition at that time.
They were, by comparison, uneducated, and considered criminals.

2) Our debt cannot be considered without considering every other country's debt to us. That's like loaning thousands of dollars yourself, then borrowing a hundred dollars, and whining about how you're a hundred dollars in debt and therefore fairly foolish.
They owe us a LOT more than we owe them, but those who wish to undermine our country for their own political purposes don't want people to know that.

3) We have more criminals in jail because of three things:
a) effective police
b) more laws
c) large population
d) better technology
e) longer sentences

Oh, I know. I said three things. So I can't count.

I'm not the only one on the page that has trouble with numbers, however.

Folks, get all the facts, not just one side.

Do you know what happened to Central America and why it has such a high crime rate? Do you know where the Central American gangs (MS, etc.) got their start?

I love this country, but I unfortunately can't deny that we are plagued by ignorance. People that come from third world countries who have completed a high school education are much more educated than those in the US (generally speaking, of course). What does it mean when people get a better education in a third world country? Of course, a part of that has to do with the fact that these people have to work very hard to go to school and they appreciate their education much more than kids in the US.

By the way, Brave, the US has traditionally has been able to attract among the best and brightest scientists and scholars from around the world. This is a good part of the reason why we've been advanced technologically. Now many of them are choosing to take their talents and important contributions elsewhere because they are having troubles getting into the US (yes, legally) since 9/11. This is not good for our country. We are not superior, however, and will never will be with attitudes like yours.

For all the things this nation has become and our politicians keep trying to change, this nation is still the best place to live with the highest standard of living anywhere in the world. Most Americans(United States Americans) think the rest of the world is like it is here. Truth is the rest of America(Central and South America) along with the rest of the world do not enjoy even 10% of the freedoms or technological advances we have here. If the rest of the world did then people would not want or need to move here, and we would want to go there.

A person who understands even a little about US, would defer with your opinion. Do you think Dutch, Swedish, Swiss are the only cultured people of the world? Right place for criminals in any country would be jails. Level of eduction of Americans is far better than most of the countries of the world. Advancement in science and technology is unparallel. Opportunities for the people with knowledge and guts are far above the rest of the world. Only fools would think otherway round.

While I would like to say much, I'll limit it. Why are there so many people in jail here? Because people get treated better in American jails and have a better quality of life than they do in many countries around the world. And they can still send money home to their families. Secondly, people died for you so could express your opinion freely and without fear. Third, spend a month in another country. You'll kiss this soil when you return, faults and all. And yes, people are still literally dying to get into this country. Ps. Are you American Indian? If not, how did you get here? They might argue that America ended with the landing of the Pilgrims.

Instead I will bring my US wife to Europe since the technology in specific fields is more advanced.

BTW: the US is not exotic or exciting enough for northern Europeans... what we feel attracted to are places like China !

Well, I hope they DON'T think the US is a great place to come to, because we have WAY too many immigrants here, legal or illegal. That's right, I don't want any immigrants here at all. Especially illegal ones. NO AMNESTY!!!!!
