Don't let some of these answers fool you. Mormons read their Bibles--at least they should. If one was to take four years of seminary, two years of that would be spent studying the Bible. If the Bible wasn't that important, why would they study it at all?
Their center is Jesus Christ, but they believe there are other aspects of the gospel as well that need to be studied. It's not all about being Gods or "getting their own planet". By the way, the only time I've seen that phrase is on here. How interesting!

Not to pick a fight, as I have good Mormon friends, but the issue is how "Jesus" (and most other doctines) is defined. Mormon theology has very little in common with that of conventional Christianity. The LDS Christ was generated by a sexual act, from a flesh-and-blood Father. The "Trinity" is simply three men who became gods. And advancement is not to "heaven" but to godhood over one's personal planet, apparently through sexual acts and the "begetting" of spiritual "children". The many contraditions between the precepts of the CJCLDS and the Bible and long-held Christian tenets would seem to be irreconcilable. So a great many conventional Christians who might otherwise acknowledge a common faith may exclude Latter Day Saints because they literally do not recognize the man they call Jesus.
Compare Muslims. They also recognize Jesus, as a prophet in the line of the Jewish prophets. They believe in most of the miracles attributed to Jesus and a few more besides. And their own prophet received a special revelation that corrected the misperceptions in the older scriptures. Yet no one thinks to call them Christians. When only the name is left in common, one can't pretend that we're talking about the same person.

I personally believe that Mormons are Christians.. I also believe that Jehovah's Witnesses are as well.
I am a Christian.. But I don't go along with the idea that a lot of people have that those are "cults" and such.. In fact, from my own experiences, I have seen that for the most part, they are similar in more ways than most people would believe (to the mainstream churches).. There are differing views are some things, but then even within the "mainstream" churches such as Pentecostal, Baptist, Catholics, etc etc.. They have many differences as well. Some between Protestant and Catholics can be pretty major differences too!
I believe there are certain areas of ALL denominations that are wrong.. and certain areas that are right.. No one church on this earth I believe has it all correct... But that doesn't mean that none of those people is going to heaven either.
Just my thoughts though :)

Even their leader Gordon Hinkley said the Jesus of the Bible isnt the same way the LDS Church teaches about Him. They twisted stuff around so much that there is no longer any resemblance to the Mormon way of referring to Christ and the traditional interpretation of Christ. Thats why mainstream churches dont accept mormonism as being Christian.

Their center piece is a book called A New Testament of Jesus Christ. A documented work of fiction. Not Jesus, unfortunately.
They are some of the best people around, but just like the rest of us Mormons have thier wackos too.

I can fixate on Hannibal Lecter and make him a "centerpiece", too: it doesn't mean that I'm a member of the American Psychiatric Association. The phenomenon of different denominations and "faiths" all claiming title to Christianity is called "riding the coat-tails", and it's all rather pathetic. Christianity is a way of life not based on being religionized by man, no matter how hard he tries to do so.
Now excuse me- I have to get ready for bed as I have to get-up early tomorrow morning. I have an appointment at the court house to "Romanize" my first name.

MOrmons believe in their own made up versions of Jesus Christ. They follow the teachings od their own prophets and not those of Jesus. They would be chrisytians if they belived fully in him but they do not,

Jesus asks that we believe in Him as He revealed Himself to us, as God the Son.
Belief in Jesus as Messiah-God is THE centerpiece of Christianity.
Since Mormons reject the Doctrine of the Trinity, and Jesus' Deity, they cannot possible be anything but a fringe element of Christian wanna-bees.
The Jehovah's Witnesses like Jesus' teaching too.
They are also just a cult because they share LDS's denial of the Deity of Jesus Christ.

Technically, all christians rebut other denomination of Christianity as non-christian and only their own denomination are christians ....... however, when it comes down to statistics, they will bind together and even invited the catholics they largely loathed to be in the group and call all as christians.
Talk about hypocrites :P.
