Thought Control in a society that prizes individual freedoms.

'Jesus Camp' is a very frighteningly clear reason why sometimes an overindulgence in belief can be dangerous (i.e., they support, nay, 'hail' G. Bush as a saint of sorts for going to war in Iraq).

We, as a people, are gaining continual handles on ancient myths and superstitions that once plagued society (i.e., witchcraft (moldy wheat bread) that caused several innocents to die in Salem).

One leftover in creed today: circumcision is constant, never (or not always) with consent of the parents. Example of superficiality.
One good thing is that they then take that skin from the babe's penis and use it for testing/experiments or other medical purposes. (Bet you didn't know that.)

Medical advances (we no longer leech those that are ill) have assured our own control over the world and nature (some followers' biggest complaint). To this I then say, we have been blessed with the intellect, it would seem blasphemous to deny its use (and not utilizing our surroundings). Would then also be blasphemous to use airplanes? Surely if God intended us to fly we would have be born winged.

Most importantly, as I've always believed, is for political reasons. (Again, I cite 'Jesus Camp' as an exmple: during the movie they express that if there were enough of them (evangelics, already 85 million in the US) they can overthrow or win any election.)

People can be good people without religions - however, according to Karen Armstrong, religion is the reason we have our liberties and preservation of self-rights in the US.

It is human nature to desire a distinction of opposites. Best cited example is this question: What is up to an astronaut?
I would argue that in our society today we are no longer seeing our commanded distinctions as limitations (thus is the will of science: to transcend perpetually that of what is known).

Some good books to reference and learn more:
"Why God Won't Go Away" - Andrew Newberg, Eugene D'Aquili
"A History of God" - Karen Armstrong

It's not that society has given up on religion, it's the new generation that is questioning the validity of religion they want answers and they want true answers something religion cannot or will not give them.

Because most (organized) religions have not resolved basic human problems such as ignorance of one's true nature, hatred, fear, insecurity, ego, violence etc. True religion must liberate man from all conditioning leading to a spiritual state which is an unconditioned, liberated and blissful state of being. On the other hand religions have created bondage and conditioned man by dogmas, 'priest-craft', superstitions, intolerance and violence. Religions have made man dependent on religious crutches when he can run on his own. Of course, this does not stop you and me from from becoming truly spiritual.

I think a lot of religious organizations focus on the wrong points now. They put more energy into proving they're right and recruiting new followers instead of just leading by example. I think faith is a wonderful thing, but I haven't seen many people practicing what they preach. If so many people are religious,. why is there so much intolerance?

I think that people are turning away from religion because there are a lot of factors pulling people away..also, now a days people are not relying on their feelings and beliefs..everything is more logical and everything needs to be seen to be believed...it is sad really and people are not willing to open their hearts truly and believe

Religion shuns no one that is reserved for men.

The bible is outdated and unrealistic. It is also sexist, racist, homophobic, hypocritical, and unbelievable. Christians have been touting the rapture for years and years, and it's never come. People want reality and truth more now than ever, and it just can't be found in religion.

I think people are starting to become more spiritually aware. Meaning they don't need religion to accomplish their desire for a spiritual connection with their Deity. Accept for the Atheist, they have found another path. :-)

You call most people following a religion giving up? Wow.

Non believers don't run into each other often enough...so it seems most people are believers.
