How long is a piece of string?
Why did the chicken cross the road?

Why are you asking this question? If you only want a Black Belt - go into a store and buy one. If you really want to do Karate just train diligently, enjoying the art, progress through the ranks at your pace and "voila" one day opproximately 2-3 years after starting you may earn a Black Belt.

When i started training in Goju Ryu way back in the 1970's, it was not uncommon to be 30 years old before you reached Black belt level. Now you can start at 3 and reach Black belt at 6! I question the wisdom in this. What next? True 'Karate' is very hard to find now and that's a shame. Perhaps the world of martial arts needs to get back to basics, No child should be given a Black belt. A Black belt was once a 'Special thing'. It is not now.

Depending on the instructor and system it should be between 4 to 5 years but like some have said a Black belt is not the end of the line or finish in your training. If you want a black belt to be able to say " I have a black belt then go to awma.com and you can buy one for about 5 bucks. if you stop training at black belt then you are no longer a black belt but have a black belt..

It is the responsibility of the Sensei, he knows his students thats why there is color belts for the sensei to know how proficient you are in the art.
Some schools and Senseis say 3yrs. to reach shodan but personally I disagree. Furthermore, the student should know from the teacher or Sensei, before he joins the classes of the art, It will be the students responsibility his devotion his dedication to the art. I'll explain to him it takes practice, practice and practice the three important facts in learning the art. Every student is different some learn faster then others.
The teachers assistants will also keep the sensei aware of the students progress.
I am happy you said adult, I do not give a certificate of rank, shodan, to a child...you must be at least 21yrs old for black belt Shodan, that's when you begin to master the art on up.
Peace......

It depends on the school. Some instructors have higher standards than others. I've had some guys tell me that it took 7 or 8 years to make black belt. I've seen others make black belt in 2 and 3 years. The latter were attending Mcdojos of course.

40 years ago, training 3 hrs per day, 5 days a week, would take 3-5 years.

now the arts have been so commericalized , classes are on hour, and you can get a black belt in a year in korea.

it is all money.

i lived there 6 years recently, but trained the hard way in the 1070's.

they got 8 year old black belts in korea that can't even through a basic puch.

it is all money nowadays!

It differs in schools...but remember my friend a "black belt" is just the start, a few years is nothing to a life time of learning you understand my friend. Look past the black belt don't even think about a belt focus on ones self your progress you will feel it with in one's self when the time is right to get your belt :) My Shoalin Kung Fu Master told me once, " A black belt is just for show to keep people in the system, I have trained Kung Fu for 45 years and I still learn to this day." that made me open my eyes and see. A belt will bring confedens but you will feel it in side of you :)

It depends on the style. If you do kenpo, and pass all your test, you can get it from 2 and a half or 3 year. Best luck!
