I have suffered from depression all my life and still take medication daily for it.I have also worked all my life.A lot of people you speak to these days have depression and can't or won't work (excuse depression) or Bi-polar ! Do people think that this phrase Bi-polar is over used. and what exactly does it mean? Are the people suffering from it at both ends of the planet?

I began to answer your question and my computer ripped it off, so I will try again. Depression does not pick and choose as to the persons it wishes to attack although it is inherited some times. I am sorry that you feel that the depressed person refuses to work even if there are available jobs. This is way out of line and I believe that quite a few depressed people would agree. We would love to live a normal life and to be happy. Whether it be bi-polar, manic, borderline depressive, dissociative disorder, not even be able to get off the couch. It is limitless. There are people everywhere with depression. It doesnot pick its favorites. I personally have tried just about every antidepressant without improvement, ECT treatments, therapy, and just about any other treatment available. I would love to be happy and just be able to experience the"normal" life. You of all people should understand the stigma attached to a person labeled with depression. Things have improved some but it has a way to go. Walk a mile in my shoes, then let me know if you think we are using depression as an excuse.

People who have bipolar disorder have cyclic moods. At one end of the spectrum, they'll be higher than a kite, unable to sleep for days at a time, and sometimes have some gradiose thinking (like they know more than the doctors or are experts and the like). Then their brain chemistry cycles down and they may very well become suicidal.

I've worked as a professional with people with this disorder and a gf's mother was bipolar. When she was in a manic phase, she'd be awake for a week straight, scrub the house and do massive crafts projects. When she'd crash, she'd lock the kids out of the house in the dead of winter, threaten to leave because she was a bad mother, or become suidical.

You tell me. Could you work while going through all of that? Not me.

Saying "the phrase bipolar is over-used" is like saying "the word diabetes is over-used."
I work for a state mental health agency, and we have a lot of people who can't work. I have seen some folks who probably could work if they really wanted to and some who obviously can't make a living. I have seen a lot of other people who really need disability benefits but they can't get it.
I have depression and I work, I know of some people who probably aren't any crazier than me and they don't have to work. I'm not concerned with them--if I didn't work I'd be in a lot worse mood than I am.
My brother has Bipolar Disorder, and he works, but he seems to lose his job every two years or so and has to look for another job. I'm not sure if his disorder has anything to do with it or not.
The person who said mania and psychosis are the same thing is wrong. Psychosis is a distortion of reality (hallucinations and delusions). Mania is the opposite of depression--excessive energy. Somebody can have psychosis in combination with either mania or depression, or by itself.

Bipolar is a much more serious condition than depression which involves mania. Another word to describe mania is psychosis.
