Sounds like a total SCAM! Run, don't walk away from it. Nobody has any access to your wife's tax return or even to the fact that she filed a return. Tax returns are confidential information and are NOT released to the public. Nor does the IRS sell their mailing lists to outside marketing firms.

Are you kidding? It's a scam, scam, scam!
No one is randomly picked to receive a grant! No one!
You must apply for this money. And then you must have a very laid out plan on how the money will be used.
The government usually only gives grant money to businesses or local government agencies. They would not give an ordinary citizen free money for no reason.

Sounds like it, looks like it, and sure as anything smells like it. Probably they'll try telling you though that they need some money from you for either processing the grant, or to cover taxes, or they will ask you for your bank information to deposit the money in your bank account. Don't send them any money and definitely do not give them your bank account. You'll find it very empty shortly after giving them your bank info. There's no grants given for filing taxes.

It is no more of a scam than the e-mail you got from the IRS. You never gave the IRS you e-mail address, did you? There's also that lottery you won that you never entered. If I sound serious, please reread this e-mail before sending me $100 for this advice. Click my profile to find out that I don't accept e-mail from Yahoo users.

Of course it's a scam. Has anyone EVER called you, or anyone else you know, in your entire life, to offer you a grant? Of course not. You APPLY for grants, no-one calls you and offers them!
Scam.
