“…take not life, which God hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom.”
[Al-Qur’an 6:151]
“…if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.”
[Al-Qur’an 5:32]
Even in a state of war, Islam enjoins that one deals with the enemy nobly on the battlefield. Islam has drawn a clear line of distinction between the combatants and the non-combatants of the enemy country. As far as the non-combatant population is concerned such as women, children, the old and the infirm, etc., the instructions of the Prophet are as follows: "Do not kill any old person, any child or any woman"[1]. "Do not kill the monks in monasteries" or "Do not kill the people who are sitting in places of worship.

"[2] During a war, the Prophet saw the corpse of a woman lying on the ground and observed: "She was not fighting. How then she came to be killed?" Thus non-combatants are guaranteed security of life even if their state is at war with an Islamic state..
So THEN WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST THAT ISLAM TEACHES TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE....CLEARLY THATS NOT WHAT ISLAM TEACHES...

Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you and the rest of the citizens of the world! Aameen.
Indeed, one of the biggest misconceptions about Islam is that this religion is one of violence; this silly and untrue view results solely from the constant stereotyping and bashing thatthe media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians,
these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist. etc.' linked with violence. Politics in so-called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means 'submission to God'
and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'.
Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered a 'way of life' for Muslims, and they make no division between secular and sacred in their lives. Islam permits fighting in self-defense,in defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops,
trees and livestock.
NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS.
The Quran says: "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190)
"If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things." (Quran
8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the
rigorous conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term
'jihad' literally means 'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two
kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad' is the inner struggle of the soul
which everyone wages against egotistic desires for the sake of
attaining inner peace.
And the Quran says, "Let there be no compulsion in religion; Truth stands out clearly from Error..." (Quran, 2:246).
So we know that fighting to spread your religion--or "in the Name of God"-- is definitely out of the way.
CONDITIONS DURING A WAR:
During wars, Muslims are NOT permitted by God to kill children, women, religious leaders (priests, imaams, rabbis, etc.), or the elderly; we're not permitted to destroy places of residence, animals (unless they're being used in the war--as has been the case in past history), or places of worship like Mosques, Churches, Temples, etc. If Muslims disobey this law, that's between them and God, and God is most Fair.
Peace to all!
Note to nicianhijacker, good you posted those...so long as you (and the readers) realizes that those verses are from the BIBLE and NOT from the Quran :D! Because the Quran portrays Moses (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a beautiful manner because he was beautiful and kind--and didn't believe in killing everyone except virgin women. Tsk, tsk.
Here's the citation for one of those verses: Numbers 31:35-40.
Peace and blessings of Allah be upon the entire humanity! Aameen.

Islam is very logical. If an enemy initiates an attack against your home, land, family or religion then you are to fight for your rights. We can never be on the offense though, because Muslims never should kill a holy creature like a human without purpose. They are a property that doesn't belong to us. People belong to God and to Him they shall return (to be judged). In the case that we are in a war, we aren't s'posed to be cowards. We must fight the evil until there is no more oppression in the land. Most of these verses are referring to the batlles at the time of the prophet like the Battle of Badr where too many Muslims were scared to fight off the invading polytheists. It was this revelation from God that gave them hope to fight for what's right.ANyway a lot of verses are taken wayyy out of context. I hope I cleared this up. God bless and peace.

Under God's direction, Moses' army defeats the Midianites. They kill all the adult males, but take the women and children captive as sex slaves. When Moses learns that they left some alive, he angrily says: "Have you saved all the women alive? Kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the female children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves." So they went back and did as Moses instructed, killing everyone except for the virgins. In this way they got 32,000 virgins . ---- 31:1-54
The Tannaïtic Midrash Sifre to Numbers in §157 comments on the above quoted commandment of MOSES to kill the Midianite women as well as the male children...."
"....According to the Tannaïte Rabbis, MOSES therefore had ordered the Israelites to kill all women older than three years and a day, because they were [virgins and] "suitable for having sexual relations." [138]...."
"Said Rabbi Joseph, "Come and take note: A girl three years and one day old is betrothed by intercourse....."
