I agree with Gurney's comments. Because you know little about a guitar take someone with you that knows how to play as you select the one for you. Have him or her play several models and brands for you and select the one that sounds pleasing to you. Then put the guitar in your lap and check the size of the neck and how comfortable it may feel in your hand.

Ask your friend to explain any question you may have about the potential new purchase. Usually a reputable music store will have several good guitarists and technicians available. Seek their advice too.

I strongly recommend starting out with an acoustic guitar. Don't worry about getting an electric until you have first gained some expertise.

WassupDoc,

I know electric guitars-first tune it up. Check to see that the 5th fret and the 12th fret are in tune on every string. Make sure that the neck isn't bowed and that all the strings ring loud and clear when played or strumed in every position and every fret.
If the neck is bad the guitar will sound bad.

Break a leg!!!

It makes NO difference, as long as it stays in tune; a $10,000 guitar won't sound any better than a $50 yard-sale guitar. Save your money and practice!

use a guitar that makes noises when you strum on the strings... those guitars are the good ones (my guitar doesn't have strings, thus makes no noises and is not a very good guitar).

Now that my smartass comment is out of the way, you never specified electric or acoustic.

Knowing a good instrument is like anything else. It takes knowledge and experience. My advice would be to take someone who knows along with you when you go looking for one.
