With a mask, you still have to be breathing...your muscles have to draw in and push out air. With a tube, even if you stop breathing, you will still get oxygen into your body,

Being intebated isn't that bad. I had a sore throat for a few days, but it is nothing to really worry about.

You might want to discuss this in details with your doc, but more than likely, no there isn't another option outside of the breathing tube down the throat because you are lying on your back and your airway needs to stay open at all times.

Intubation is required for all surgeries that require
general anesthesia.

They do it so that the partial paralysis brought about
by knocking you out doesn't cause you to aspirate
into your lungs and stop you from breathing usefully.

Don't worry - the tube is gone by the time you are
in recovery. You probably won't ever know it
was there...

the breathing tube is standard practice. it positively ensures that an airway will stay open in case artifitial breathing must be started. a mask can't do that. btw, gl.

You could talk to the doctors but I doubt there is anything you can do about the tube.

I had no problems with my surgery with breathing.
