When arriving in a resturant (like Red Lobster, Chilis, TGIF, Applebees), what should one do? Or more like what will happen, will the person be directed towards an empty table or what? And when the bill arrives, how is a tip decided?

You walk in, and wait to be seated. If you had a good waiter, the tip is normally double the tax (tax is 7.75% ish....and tip should be 15%).

normally a hostess would seat you or head waiter or waitress. If noone is doing this, look for an empty table that will be big enough for the number in your party. If there is more than one check at the table, everyone decides on the tip(I do 20%,more if they were really good) according to what the tab came to. If one person is treating then the other party should take care of tip. If everyone is all on one tab, but ate different priced items, figure out between you what the tip should be as long as thw waitress is getting what she should. Hope this helps.

Have you never been to a restaurant before? Usually at places like you mentioned, there is a hostess near the door and she will ask how many people are in the party and she will direct you to an empty table. A waiter will come by and you will place your order. It is common to tip between 15 and 20% of the total bill, even if the service was not great, you should leave something.

Normally in most of those places you are expected to wait to be seated. If this is not the case, there will be a sign saying "Please Seat Yourself," (this is not usually the case during busier times). A hostess or host will seat you. The usual tip to a waiter or waitress is 15-20% of the bill.
