All of them were waiting for the Messiah promised first in Genesis 3:15. You have to understand that sometimes in the N.T. "Jews" means the general population of the Jewish community, sometimes it means the high-ups (i.e. Sanhedrin, Pharisees, Saducees). Many of the former were clueless (may have given up on the idea), many of them along with the high-ups, were looking for a political leader (King) to free them from the suppression of the Roman tyranny. There were only a few that were waiting for the Jesus Christians know. Most of them misunderstood God's later promise to send them a King in the line of David (2 Samuel 7:1-17) to mean an earthly, political King, but throughout Jesus' ministry He is constantly trying to get even His disciples to understand that His Kingdom "is not of this world," (John 18:36).

The Catholics view of the Jewish was inadvertently made to deceive the truth about the messiah that the Jews were expecting. Do not believe whatever the Catholics or Christian will say about the Jews. Ask the Traditional Jewish people themselves because there are also Christian Jews who are totally misled....go to this website...www.thename.ph

They were waiting for the Messiah, a savior who would free them from the Romans. They are still waiting for him to this day, even tho the Romans are long gone, except for the Catholic ones. And the Christians are still waiting for Jesus to come back again. It has been over 2000 years, so I don't believe he is coming.
He did once tell his disciples that they would not have gone over all of Judea (preaching) before he came the second time.

Jesus irritated the Religious leaders by telling then they were hypocrites. The religious leaders rejected Jesus. This was Gods plan.
