**Veritas said: It's a sacrament of healing in the Catholic Church. The sick person is not always healed, but the spiritual benefits are always conferred, and they are the more important of the two.**
Perhaps you can explain exactly how this works. How does mere oil cause a person to be healed of, say, cancer? What are the physics of the process? And how does oil--a physical object--confer any kind of spiritual benefits? Sounds to me like it's just another superstition, like a four-leaf clover bringing good luck, or knocking on wood averting evil. I really don't see any difference. If the Catholic church told you that finding a four-leaf clover would heal you of an ailment and bring spiritual blessings from God, would you go out into a field look for one?

It's a sacrament of healing in the Catholic Church. The sick person is not always healed, but the spiritual benefits are always conferred, and they are the more important of the two.
In Mark 6:13 the apostles anointed the sick with oil and cured them.
In James 5:14 the presbyters (priests) are called to anoint the sick with oil and pray over them. Their sins are forgiven. This is the sacrament of the sick, also called extreme unction. In James 5:15 it says during the annointing, the priest's prayer of faith will "save" the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up.

The anointing of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive. A sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus Christ to confer inward grace. In more basic terms, it is a rite that is performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament’s Institution
Like all the sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. The Catechism explains, "This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament. It is alluded to indeed by Mark, but is recommended to the faithful and promulgated by James the apostle and brother of the Lord" (CCC 1511; Mark 6:13; Jas. 5:14-15).
The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude (CCC 1520). These graces flow from the atoning death of Jesus Christ, for "this was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, ‘He took our infirmities and bore our diseases’" (Matt. 8:17).
Mark refers to the sacrament when he recounts how Jesus sent out the twelve disciples to preach, and "they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them" (Mark 6:13). In his epistle, James says, "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven" (Jas. 5:14–15).
There are many different oils for anointing with different uses

when it comes to the oil nothing, but from a BIBLICAL point of view it is a symbol of the HOLY SPIRIT. The anointing with oil is a symbolic gesture of faith, that means that the recipiant and the givers are trusting in GOD by anointing with oil to do HIS will according to HIS righteousness. we surrender to the outcome, and let GOD be GOD. It doesn't mean that someones faith is greater or lacking. it means I trust you oh my GOD.

Messiah means an anointed Prophet sent as a redeemer and uniter of the tribes ?
Islam believes in ONE God – the Lord of Abraham.
In Islam Jesus is not considered God but he is called the Jewish Messiah.
In Islam Messiah does not mean God or son of God.
Abraham was chosen to be a Great Prophet of the Creator of the Universe.
Abraham had two sons who were both to be blessed with a Holy Covenant at separate times.
The Holy Covenant are promises from The Lord of Abraham in return for taking on the responsibility to "Make Allah/God known to the World" and establishing the “comprehensive laws of God” on the Earth.
Ishmael - first son - ISLAM
Issac - second son - JUDAISM & Christianity
JUDAISM is the covenant through Isaac.
ISLAM is the covenant through Ishmael.
God sent down many Prophets to the Israelites but they would keep calling them imposters and killing them.
Finally God sent down the last Israelite Prophet who would come in a way that nobody could say he was an imposter.
He would have a miracle birth, miracle cures and a blessed speech. If the Jews believed in this last Israelite Prophet then God would forgive them, so Jesus was sent as their Messiah (redeemer, savior and uniter of the Tribes).
If the Jews believed in Jesus as their Messiah, God was going to forgive them for slaying all the Prophets in the past and save them from an Eternal curse. If they follow the admonitions of the Messiah then he would be their “savior” otherwise a curse would come on them for denying or trying to slay ANOTHER Prophet from God.
Those Jews who rejected Jesus, will be sent a False Messiah near the last days as a final chastisement after the Lord gathers them all into one small area.
Muslims have a seperate covenant through the the first son of Abraham - Ishmael .
Muslims are not dependant on a Jewish Messiah for atonement or guidance.
Muslims are independant of the historical rebellion of the children of Isaac.
The traditional title of Messiah, or "anointed one" was an honorary title of God's appointed King/Prophet of the Israelites.
Saul was a messiah, David was a Messiah, Zedekiah, the last king of Israel of the line of Judah was a Messiah
