probably the only reason why it got famous, because that's the easiest joke to remember, i mean when i was little it was that joke and the knock knock jokes, its a classic for all little kids

I dunno who invented that riddle but I guess it is so famous because there are many possible answers...infinite answers actually. Everyone has their own "theory" and may change it at any time.
