We're in the early days of potty training my 2 1/2 yr. old son, and this evening we have a problem! He's never managed to produce anything on the potty chair so far, but we've told him that when he does, he'll get a sticker (which he really, really wants!). So tonight, he said that he had to go and sat for about five minutes. Finally, after I could tell that he was trying, he managed to pass some gas. Since I felt that this showed that he had the general idea right and since he had been trying so hard, I decided to reward him with the sticker. I told him that since he had almost done it, I was proud of him for making such an effort. Ten minutes after I put him to bed, he stood up and started calling down the hall that he had to go potty. I let him get up and sit back on the potty chair. It was a no go. He is now in bed, crying loudly and screaming that he has to go again. Do you think think he just wants another go at the stickers, or maybe he's constipated? I feel terrible!

My son did the same thing! We would let him up once to try, and after that it was bed time, and we would not let him back up. Most of the time it is just a stalling tactic, a chance to get the sticker and up out of bed. watch is bathroom habits during the day to make sure he is going at least once, and if he is than he is probably not constipated.

If he is not constipated, then dont worry too much. My daughter was potty trained for pee-pee for a few months before she would ever do the other. She always wanted to put a pull up to do it. At first I was frustrated, but then I realized that she would learn it eventually. So, then every time she had to go I would ask if she wanted to go on the potty and FINALLY one day she did and ever since she has been completely potty trained.

The possible constipation is the easy part, just give him some apple juice, a couple cups of that should relieve the problem. As to his crying, he will cry himself to sleep. I know how tough that is. Just shut the door, and do your best to ignore it. If he has an accident, make no big deal of it, in the morning. He'll come around in a short time.
