I've never really understood why God would give free will then damn you to hell if you did not do what he wants. I think of God as all loving but this sounds pretty cruel to me. I can't marry the two. It makes God sound like a tyrant. Also does anybody know anything about the devil being created in religious texts in the 13th century? Someone told me this once and just wondered if it were true.

I have no wish to attack the spiritual. I'm asking a serious question because I am trying to make sense of what I have heard others say about God. In exploring my own spiritual journey I dont attack anyone else's beliefs. I just ask questions to further my understanding. I believe in an all knowing God as I do an all loving God. If I say I follow God's teachings without understanding them then I believe that would make me a fool and surely God would know this too. I'm just asking if anyone else thinks it is possible that God does not judge.

God will only judge us us if we judge others!
Your right he is a loving God and also a just God.
He does not send us to Hell, we can do that if we really know him but then reject him.
If someone asks you to come for a meal and then you refuse, that is your fault not the one who is asking.
The Devil or Satan pre dates the 13th. century as he is in Scripture-2000 years ago, and before.

The bible says the wages of sin is death.Sin can be looked on as all the rubbish that clutters up our lives polluting the soul. This rubbish cuts us off from a friendship with God as it gets in the way, leaving us feeling dead on the inside, often guilty. Any legal fine has to be paid. God doesn't want us to stay guilty. He loves us too much for that.He wants to forgive.Hebrews 12:23 talks about God the judge of all. He can't ignore the problem or forget it so he offers us a solution. God didn't want us to get the death sentence for our sin so, Jesus stood in our place. He took the rubbish off us and onto himself on the cross. The rubbish that keeps us guilty and ruins our friendship with God. In his death, Jesus removed the blockage of sin. He rescued us from its power and brought us face to face with God again.
Free will gives us the ability to accept this solution or reject it. If we reject it, then the blockage is still there and the wages of sin still stand. God can't do any more- He gave up His son to pay the penalty. Therefore, God is a God of judgement but offers us a solution of accepting Jesus. Doing this, He also displays His love and compassion.
The other name for the devil is Satan. Satan once lived in heaven as an angel called Lucifer. He tried to overthrow God and was thrown out. A third of the angels went with him. So he well and truly pre dates 13th century.

It is a test. It tests our faith. If we are true to god and seiriously believe then the majority of our decisions will be right. Still all people sin which damns us. But if we are truly sorry for our mistake and repent then we are saved.

All religion can be dangerous outside of the person's own knowledge of themselves, Your wish to attack the spiritual can only be questioned by ourselves. Satan is in the bible. Check it out yourself. Atheists think we came from fish. Okay who made those fish and the big bang - and why do we have such feelings for nature? Good luck in you journey and may it be taken in peace.

Romans 9:11-23
11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, [2] but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?” 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory

HE MADE A WAY FOR US TO STAY OUT OF HELL- HE SENT HIS SON , JESUS AS THE PAYMENT FOR SIN- BECAUSE GOD IS JUST THERE HAS TO BE PUNISHMENT FOR SIN, HOWEVER IN HIS LOVE HE SENT JESUS- WHY CAN'T PEOPLE COME TO HIM, AND THEN YOU WOULD REALLY EXPERIENCE HIS LOVE, WHICH IS GREATER THAN ANYTHING. SATAN IS THE ONE THAT WANTS YOU TO THINK HE WAS JUST MADE UP IN THE CENTURY. GOD IS NOT A TYRANT- WE ARE SINNERS- ALL SIN AND FALL SHORT OF HIS GLORY- HE PAID THE PRICE, ACCEPT THE GIFT,AND THEN YOU WILL NOT BE CONDEMNED.

FAQ: How could a loving God cast people into hell?

"And I have the keys of hell and death, signifies that He alone can save. By "keys" is signified the power of opening and shutting; here the power of opening hell, that man may be brought forth, and of shutting, lest, when he is brought forth, he should enter again. For man is born in evils of all kinds, thus in hell, for evils are hell; he is brought out of it by the Lord, to whom belongs the power of opening it. That by "having the keys of hell and death," is not meant the power of casting into hell, but the power of saving, is because it immediately follows after these words:

Behold, I am alive for ages of ages;

by which is signified that He alone is eternal life (n. 60); and the Lord never casts anyone into hell, but man casts himself. By "keys" is signified the power of opening and shutting, in Revelation also (3:7; 9:1; 20:1; also in Isa. 22:21, 22; in Matt. 16:19; and in Luke 11:52). The power of the Lord is not only over heaven, but also over hell; for hell is kept in order and connection by oppositions against heaven; for which reason, He who rules the one must necessarily rule the other; otherwise man could not be saved; to be saved is to be brought out of hell" (Apocalypse Revealed n. 62).
