When I open a file in excel, it saves the numbers as a data file, instead of numerical, so when I try to add everything up, it shows up as an error. Any help?

Not sure what you are importing into Excel so that it is formating it as "text" rather then numbers, but have you tried highlighting the cells with the data and using the "Format" menu to change the data to a numeric format?

Can you give any more detail about what you are opening in Excel?

You mean it saves the data as alpha-numeric charaters instead of numeric?

You will have to do a global search and replace in the data file before importing it into Excel. If a numeric value is enclosed in quotes e.g. "10234" then it will not be treated as numeric data. You could remove those quotes in NotePad using search and replace. If the values are in separate columns then you could format the column as numeric.

You can use the value formula. Suppose all your numbers are in column A. You can duplicate the values in column B as values and sum them.

In cell B1 type: =VALUE(A1)
Copy this formula down the length of column B.
Add the numbers in column B.

If you want, you can copy column B; select column A; click Edit, Paste Special; select Values; press OK.
This will replace the text in column A with the number values you created in column B.

You can modify this to suit your needs. If you have an entire worksheet with these numbers, you can use a new worksheet instead of a new column to do these formulas. In Sheet2, cell A1, type: =VALUE(Sheet1!A1)

This should get you started. I'm sure you can figure it out from here.
