My daughter has been bridesmaid two times and both times she had to pay her dress and, naturally, her purple shoes and purple accessories, and give a gift as well. The ushers and best man had to do take care of their tuxes, etc. as well. Both weddings were Catholic, Italian.
Perhaps it depends on what nationality and/or religion the bride and groom are? I'm not sure.

Sorry, but your tux rental is not your gift to the happy couple, unless they specifically tell you that you don't need to bring a gift, because you had to rent a tux.
If you are attending the reception, you should bring a gift. It should be of a value to at least offset the cost of your meal.
Read that somewhere. And in these days, where regular middle class people spend a fortune on a dream wedding, it is their expectation that the guests give money for a gift to offset the price of the wedding. Go rent "Father of the Bride", the newer version, with Steve Martin in it. Steve says into his cell phone to the wedding planner "you're breaking up, I thought you said $200 a plate." The planner says "No, $400." You get the picture.
Hope this helps.

Not true. If I am invited, I give a wedding gift regardless of whether I am wearing a tux or a navy blue blazer.
I think it is a nice to have guests wear tuxedos at a wedding, but I generally would not wear one unless it was apparent that many people were going to do so. By the way, I own a tuxedo, so it is not a problem for me.

If your going to be renting a tux to be in the wedding, you accepted with the obligation to take care of the expenses of the tux and a gift is still in order.

A gift is a gift, you never have to give one! If you are part of the wedding party, and rent your own Tux, I suppose you could cheap-skate out of a gift...but why? Your Friend, brother, whoever choose you to stand for him; probably deserves a gift. It doesn't have to cost a fortune...just something to let the happy couple know you thought of them.

What you wear is your choice but you should feel obliged to bring a gift if someone has invited you to their wedding. It's not every day you get an offer like that. If you don't bring something, you will offend the person who invited you, who wants you to share their joy.

If that's true, I'd like to exchange a couple of bridesmaids dresses for the presents I gave the happy couples in question. But it's not. Why, oh why do I not have an espresso machine of my own?
