I recently bought a wooden pipe, when i inhale a taste a small amount of wood. Is this safe?

Well when you are smoking you might as well smoke from a wood pipe, it is still hurting your lungs, if you want it would be better to get a water pipe, bubbler, or glass pipe, the ones with water are safer for your lungs because the water filters the nicotine, tar, etc. before it gets in your lungs

The whole point of using a wooden pipe is the flavor it adds. A pottery, etc., pipe adds no flavor at first but if used a long time with the same tobacco acquires a taste. But so do your teeth, breath, mouth and the inside of your lungs if you inhale.

As a healtcare provider I have a question for you. You are smoking ....and your biggest concern is the wood? I don't get it.
