Well you might want to try removing spyware and hopefully you have antivirus. Sounds like windows explorer is corrupted. If your computer isnt too old you might just have to reinstall windows. But first check for the other stuff if you havent already. I assume you get windows errors after it crashes.

dont open the folder. OR give more details as to what you mean "crashes" does it blue screen or closes explorer etc

There's a lot of possibilities, but make sure your computer is virus- and spyware-free first. If the problem still exists, verify if you have a network drive that mapped to a server that no longer exist, disconnect it if you happen to have that. If you still have problems, reload your machine from scratch :-)
